-Dorin-Ballard Nominated For ESPY Award

06/05/2002 - PWBA
ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS - Reigning PWBA Player of the Year Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas has been nominated for a 2002 ESPY Award in the "Best Bowler" category. The industry-wide celebration of sports, which pays homage to the best sports achievements and performers, will host its annual awards show at the Kodak Theatre on July 10. The event will be broadcast live on ESPN at 9 p.m. (E.T.)

"I am very excited to be recognized by the ESPY committee," said Dorin-Ballard. "It is a flattering achievement. As the only woman nominated in the category it would be wonderful to win and help promote the women's tour."

Dorin-Ballard put together one of the best seasons ever in the history of the sport in 2001. In 23 tournaments the 13-year pro tied Patty Costello's 1976 record for the most professional bowling titles in a single season with seven. She closed out the year as the PWBA leader in earnings ($135,045), competition points (17,415) and averages (214.73). In addition she led all PWBA'ers in televised finals appearances with a record 18 telecasts and broke or set eleven other PWBA records.

"Not in my wildest dreams did I ever expect to have a season like last year. Our tour has so many talented players. In many ways the other athletes helped me perform at such a high level because I had to bowl extremely well every week to compete with them," Dorin-Ballard stated.

Selected as the Bowlers Journal International Person of the Year, Dorin-Ballard's status as the world's top female bowler was reinforced by the Bowling Writers Association of America, Bowling Digest, the New Jersey Sports Writers Association and the Southwest Bowling Writers Association, who all concurred with the PWBA in recognizing her as the best woman bowler for 2001.

Known as one of the most consistent players on tour, Dorin-Ballard has cashed in all four PWBA events this year extending her consecutive "cashed" streak to 74. The 17-time titlest and five-time Women's International Bowling Congress All-American is among five "Best Bowler" nominees including PBA'ers Parker Bohn III, Jason Couch, Pete Weber and Walter Ray Williams Jr.

"I have the utmost respect for the other nominees," she said. "They are all great champions."

ESPY awards are determined by a collection of legendary athletes and nationally recognized broadcast and print journalists. A complete list of the nominees can be seen on Recent Tour411 Updates:
