-Best Amateurs Seek Team USA 2003 Spots At USA Bowling Amateur Championships In Reno

      More than 175 of the best amateur bowlers in the United States will try to earn spots on Team USA 2003 when they compete in the USA Bowling Amateur Championships Jan. 6-10 at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev.

      All players will roll 12 qualifying games Jan. 7 and another 12 games Jan. 8 with the top 32 men and top 32 women advancing to match play beginning Jan. 9. The 32 match-play games continue through Jan. 10 with the top five men and top five women automatically qualifying for Team USA 2003. Another three men and three women will be chosen by a national selection committee based on such criteria as performance, physical game, mental game and team play.

      Serving on the national selection committee will be Team USA coaches Fred Borden, Jeri Edwards and Gordon Vadakin; USA Bowling certified coach Susie Minshew; and former Team USA player Kendra Gaines.

      Competitors scheduled to appear include: 2001 U.S. Amateur Champions Shannon Pluhowsky, Phoenix; and Andrew Cain, Tempe, Ariz.; 1999 U.S. Amateur Champions Bill Hoffman, Columbus, Ohio; and Diandra Hyman, Dyer, Ind.; 1998 U.S. Amateur Champions Mike Mullin, New City, N.Y.; and Debbie Kuhn, Baltimore; and 1996 U.S. Amateur Champion Lucy Sandelin, Tampa.

      Other current and past Team USA members scheduled to compete include: Missy Bellinder, Fullerton, Calif.; Dino Castillo, Dallas; Lisa Duenow, Mound, Minn.; Rick Graham, Lancaster, Pa.; David Haynes, Las Vegas; Steve Kloempken, Ogden, Utah; Sam Lantto, Eden Prairie, Minn.; Tony Manna Jr., Omaha, Neb.; Jeanette Menacho, Sacramento, Calif.; Kris Netherton, Sacramento, Calif.; Jennifer Petrick, Canton, Ohio; Sean Rash, Anchorage, Alaska; Royce Rusher, Tulsa, Okla.; Derek Sapp, Macomb, Ill.; Kari Schwager, Montgomery, Ill.; Kristal Scott, Painesville, Ohio; and Stacy Werth, Rocklin, Calif.

      Among others scheduled to compete is USA Bowling Past President Kevin Dornberger.

      The tournament will feature lane conditions compliant with the Sport Bowling program. Developed by the American Bowling Congress and Women's International Bowling Congress, Sport Bowling is a level of sanctioned league and tournament competition designed to emphasize bowlers' skill and re-establish the credibility of the sport.

      Lane patterns will be administered by Lane DynamX, the official lane maintenance provider for USA Bowling.

      The week also will include a seminar Jan. 6 sponsored by Storm and Dartfish at the Stadium's IMAX Theater. Other sponsors include Peppermill Hotel Casino, Big Dogs, Twelve Strike and the Bowling Proprietors' Association of America. Walk-up entries will be accepted through Jan. 6.

      Team USA 2003 members will participate in events such as the Pan American Games, Federation Internationale des Quilleurs World Championships and AMF World Cup.
