PBA World Championship Moves
11/15/2002 - PBA
Seattle, WA - The PBA has moved the location of its season-ending World Championship from Toledo, Ohio to Taylor, Mich., March 3 -- 9, 2003.
The move was necessitated by the loss of the arena at Savage Hall on the campus of the University of Toledo for the final rounds of competition.
The PBA World Championship will now take place at Taylor Lanes for pro-ams, practice, qualifying rounds and early match-play competition. The tournament will then shift to Taylor Sportsplex for the final two days of competition in a 3,000 seat setting.
"On one hand we are really sorry for having to leave Toledo," said Mark Bisbing, PBA Vice President of Tournament Operations. "Sheri Gratop and Darrell Ducat have been tremendous hosts and the city of Toledo has been so supportive of the PBA for the last 22 years. On the other hand, we are very happy that Taylor Lanes has agreed to be our host and we hope that the people of Toledo can make the short trip to see the greatest bowlers in the world."
The tournament will begin on Monday, March 3 with practice rounds followed by three days of qualifying. After the third day of qualifying the field will be trimmed to 64.
On Friday morning, March 7, the 64 remaining bowlers will begin best four-of-seven, head-to-head match-play competition that will cut the field to 32. Winners will return in the early afternoon for the best four-of-seven round of 32, and the first round of 16, best three-out-of-five will take place on Friday evening.
In a new twist, the top eight bowlers with the most points heading into the tournament will earn an automatic match play berth. These elite players will skip qualifying and the early elimination rounds and head straight to the second round of 16 for a best three-of-five games.
Bowlers advancing will then head into the round of 8 with winners of that round advancing to the live ESPN telecast Sunday, March 9 at 12:30 p.m. ET.
