-Feldman Wins Greater San Diego Open

11/01/2002 - PWBA
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - In classic come-from-behind fashion, Michelle Feldman, Skaneateles, NY won the Greater San Diego Open after she defeated Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nev. 236-204 in the title match. The victory earned the 11-time titlest $9,000.

"This might be one of my sweetest wins on tour," said Feldman. "I barely made the show and then I had to win from the five-spot which I haven't had the best of luck with."

Seeded fifth coming into the finals, Feldman clawed her way into the TV finals on Thursday when she leaped from seventh place in the 42nd game after defeating Kendra Gaines, Sebring, Fla. 218-217.

The champion began her march to the title match on Friday after she dispatched Marianne DiRupo, Succasunna, NJ and Tish Johnson, Northridge, Calif. 228-198-194 in the opening shootout.

"The last few times I've made the show I hadn't got out of the first match," said Feldman. "Today, I just wanted to win the first game and try to gain some momentum. When I'm on TV I either bowl at a very high level or I score low."

Performing a high level may be an understatement when describing Feldman's bowling acumen. The native New Yorker upended Leanne Barrette, Pleasanton, Calif, 268-189 in the semis finishing with eight consecutive strikes. The champion tallied a 732 series in her three matches.

In her bout with Macpherson the champion didn't get off to the best of starts. While Macpherson struck in the first three frames, Feldman opened in the second after failing to pick up the 3-6.

However, the tables turned for Feldman after the open by tossing a four-bagger in frames three thru six. Macpherson lost her edge in the fourth when she missed the 2-8 split.

With 11-pins separating the finalists going into the eight frame, Feldman turned her game up a notch by striking in three of her next four shots. Although she would mark as well, Macpherson could not make up the deficit.

For second place Macpherson took home $4,800. Barrette cashed for $3,000 while Johnson and DiRupo earned $2,500 and $2,200 respectively.

The finals of the Greater San Diego Open will be televised on ESPN2 on November 4 at 10 p.m. (ET).
