-Adler Lands New Sponsor Thru eBay Auction

09/06/2002 - PWBA
ROCKFORD, Ill. - Inspired by the kind of creativity that would make Bill Veeck proud, Professional Women's Bowling Association member Kim Adler, Cocoa, Fla. officially came to terms with New York-based Pacific Pools today in which the company purchased ad space on Adler's skirt or shorts for $14,389 thru an eBay auction.

"I think its in an athletes best interest to take advantage of whatever assets they have to market themselves," said Adler "My hope is this transaction opens doors for other bowlers."

PWBA President John Falzone added, "The PWBA has always supported a players desire to promote themselves. What I think is the most encouraging part of this process is the number of companies that researched and were intrigued by endorsing a PWBA member."

"We are excited to be working with Kim Adler and the PWBA", said Bill Wiley, Director of Marketing for Pacific Pools. "We sell inground swimming pools to middle America all over the country and there isn't any sport that everyday Americans get involved with as much as bowling."

According to eBay officials, Adler is the first individual professional athlete to solicit sponsorship thru their internet auction. The 12-year pro started the bidding for $4,000 on August 17 and elected to run the auction until August 31. Over the last two weeks Adler's innovative idea has generated national publicity from media such as USA Today, CBS, FOX and Sporting News Radio and CNN. To date, she has done more than 50 interviews pertaining to the sale.

As the winning bidder, Pacific Pools will get logo placement on Adler's skirt or shorts for a year. All PWBA tournaments are televised on ESPN or ESPN2. With rebroadcasts of several of its events, the PWBA is seen on national TV between 40-50 times a season with an average viewership of over half a million households.

This year Adler has been among the top performers on tour notching a title at the St. Clair Classic and appearing in three consecutive televised finals in May. The former Rookie of the Year has 15 championships to her credit and has been in the championship round over 55 times in her career.

Entering the fall swing Adler ranks fourth in earnings ($42,285), seventh in competition points (6,330) and eighth in averages (212.34). The PWBA will resume its 2002 schedule on September 15 with the Three Rivers Open in Pittsburgh, Pa. The next telecast, the Sport Bowling Champions Challenge, airs on ESPN on September 16 at 10 p.m. (ET)
