ROCKFORD, Ill. - Once again, breast cancer research was the big winner in Houston when the 3rd Annual PWBA Luci Bonneau Southwest Region Mixed Doubles was held at Dynamic Lanes August 9-11. The Tournament and conjunctive Pro-Am raised over $27,000 for the Stehlin Foundation and the ongoing battle against breast cancer.
Named after former PWBA Southwest Region Champion and Texas Women's Bowling Hall of Famer Luci Bonneau, who passed away in October 1999 after a battle with breast cancer. Bonneau was also an original partner in Dynamic Lanes. Bonneau's best friend, Donna Conners, organized the event in honor of her friend.
Participants from across the country comprised a full professional field with three sold out Pro-Am squads totaling 336 entrants. Conners reported that through August 14, over $27,000 had been received from donations and sponsors.
The event's lead sponsor was Storm Bowling Products, with Starbucks Coffee of Houston, the Hilton Southwest Hotel, Mike Austin's Precision Pro Shop and Park Central Recreation Center of Pt. Arthur also contributing.
All proceeds from the event benefited the Houston based Stehlin Foundation for cancer research, whose doctors and staff have assisted Bonneau and thousands of other women in their fight against the disease.
Bill and Barbara Chrisman, owners of Storm Bowling Products of Ogden, Utah, were very active in promoting the event and offering their time and support. Barbara Chrisman, who participated in one of the sold out Pro-Ams, added "Storm is honored to be associated with this wonderful event, and, as a woman, I am especially proud that we can help with such a great cause. We are happy to give our support for as long as it is needed!"
Team USA Members Diandra Hyman, Dyer, Indiana and Dino Castillo, Irving, Texas won the 2002 Luci Doubles. Hyman, who will be graduating from the University of the Nebraska this year, recently competed in a PWBA national tournament at the Dallas Open where she finished 19th.
The 2002 Luci Doubles is the second PWBA event to raise money for breast cancer this season. On June 22 the Susan G. Komen Open, which was held as a PWBA Western Regional tournament, raised over $20,000 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
