Carolyn Dorin-Ballard Secures Top Seed At $50,000 Ft. Worth Classic
06/20/2001 - Bowling Newsline
FT. WORTH, Texas - Carolyn Dorin-Ballard showed no mercy in the final round of match play at the $50,000 Ft. Worth Classic, rolling a 264 in her closing game to command the top seed for the TV championship round Thursday night at Don Carter CityView Lanes.
Dorin-Ballard's 42-game pinfall of 9,880 and match play record of 16-7-1 took her to a commanding 289-pin lead over second-place Liz Johnson, who closed with 9,591 pins and a 13-11-0 record. Dorin-Ballard averaged more than four pins a game better than Johnson, and more than10 pins a game better than third-place Cara Honeychurch of Australia, who took third with 9,373 pins and a 14-10-0 record.
"My nerves were a little better tonight, but I'm glad it's over," Dorin-Ballard said of bowling in front of a hometown audience. "It's nice to be in the limelight, but it does put a little more pressure on you.
"It's been the characteristic of the Sport Bowling conditions that you either have to go way right or way left on the lane as the evening wears on, but tonight it was difficult to move inside. The shot just wasn't there. I was able to move left a little so that I could go around some of the carrydown."
If Dorin-Ballard's finish came as no surprise to anyone, Kendra Gaines, Sebring, Fla., provided the upset of the night. In seventh after 41 games, Gaines used the position round to move around both Marianne DiRupo and Anne Marie Duggan after the latter two opened in the 10th frame and gain the fourth position on the stepladder. Gaines finished with 9,285 pins and a 12-10-2 record. Dede Davidson, Las Vegas, claimed the fifth and final spot with 9,282 pins and a 16-7-1 match play record. DiRupo settled for sixth, 13 pins behind Davidson, while Duggan closed 45 pins off the pace for the TV show.
The top five advance to Thursday night's championship round, which begins with a one-game shootout between Honeychurch, Gaines and Davidson at 7 p.m. The winner of the shootout takes on Johnson in the semifinal match, while the winner of that match squares off against Dorin-Ballard for the $9,000 first prize and Ft. Worth Classic title. The championship round will be broadcast by ESPN2 Monday, June 25, at 9 p.m. and re-aired Thursday, June 28, at 1 p.m. (all TV times are Eastern). Travelodge Hotels Inc. will reward any bowler rolling a 300 game on the TV show with a $50,000 bonus.

Dorin-Ballard Skyrockets Into First At $50,000 Ft. Worth Classic
06/20/2001 - PWBA
FT. WORTH, Texas - Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas, averaged 232.22 in the Wednesday morning round at Don Carter CityView Lanes to carve out a 107-pin advantage over her nearest rival, Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y., in quest of the $50,000 Ft. Worth Classic championship.
Dorin-Ballard, who is seeking her third victory of the season, boosted her overall match play record to 10-5-1 and total pinfall to 7,774 after a slow start that found her in 19th place after the first round Monday. She has a 219.38 average for the tournament thus far, compared to Johnson's 218.44 average and 8-8-0 match play record.
"I was a little angry with myself Monday; I knew I did not bowl as well as I should have. It took me five games to get lined up, while Liz was bowling phenomenally. I saw where she was playing, knew where I should be playing, and just tried to hang in until I got my feel back," Dorin-Ballard said.
"Based on what I saw Tuesday night, and this morning, I think we're likely to see a variety of conditions on the lanes for the last match play round. Some lanes are going to have a little 'hang' from the oil carrydown, and some are going to be hooking a lot. So I will need to have a couple of balls drilled for each condition to be prepared for all possibilities."
Another Texan, Karen Stroud of Victoria, is holding onto third place with 7,496 pins and an 11-5-0 match play record. Kim Terrell, Daly City, Calif., recovered from an early slump Wednesday morning to claim fourth place, with 7,454 pins and a 6-10-0 record. Marianne DiRupo, Succasunna, N.J., is 10 pins behind Terrell at 7,444, with an 11-5-0 record. Tuesday night's leader, Cara Honeychurch of Australia, is nine pins behind DiRupo, with total pinfall of 7,435 and a 9-7-0 record.
The remaining 24 players finish match play Wednesday night with eight final games, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The top five at the conclusion of match play will bowl for the $50,000 Ft. Worth Classic title Thursday night at Don Carter CityView, beginning at 7 p.m. The Nos. 3, 4, and 5 bowlers will open the championship round with a one-game shootout match, with the highest scorer taking on the second-seeded bowler in the semifinal match. The winner of that face-off goes against the tournament leader for the title and $9,000 first prize. ESPN2 will televise the finals Monday, June 25, at 9 p.m. and re-air them Thursday, June 28, at 1 p.m. (all TV times are Eastern). Travelodge Hotels Inc. is offering a $50,000 bonus to any bowler who rolls a 300 game in the TV stepladder.

PWBA Goes To Funquest Lanes In Quest Of Fun And Fortune at $50,000 Greater Memphis Open
06/20/2001 - PWBA
ROCKFORD, ILL. - The Professional Women's Bowling Association visits Elvis Presley's "ol' stompin' grounds" June 24-28 as the PWBA Tour rolls into Collierville, Tenn., for the $50,000 Greater Memphis Open at Funquest Lanes.
The PWBA is visiting Collierville for the first time ever and the Memphis area for the first time since 1997, when Kim Adler won the Sam's Town Tunica Mid-South Classic in Memphis. Adler, a 14-time PWBA champion from Cocoa, Fla., is expected to be on hand along with top-drawer competitors such as the 2000 PWBA Player of the Year Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nev.; 2001 WIBC Queens and Albuquerque Open champion Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas; and 2001 Greater San Diego Open champ and 2000 PWBA Rookie of the Year Cara Honeychurch of Australia.
Also expected to compete is pro bowling's new "Ironwoman," Tish Johnson, Northridge, Calif. Johnson broke the PWBA's record for most consecutive tournaments by an individual at the $50,000 Ft. Worth Classic June 17-21, when she competed in her 201st event. Collierville will push her mark to 202 tournaments without a miss.
Tournament Week begins Saturday, June 23, at 6 p.m., with a "Welcome to Memphis" barbeque party for the pros hosted by Funquest Lanes. The official PWBA practice session follows Sunday morning from 8:30 - 10:30 a.m., with Pro-Am squads scheduled every two hours from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Pro-Ams give amateur bowlers a chance to test their bowling skills against the pros in a nine-pin no-tap doubles format tournament for cash prizes (youth bowlers play for trophies and other prizes). Pro-Am entrants also receive an autograph certificate signed by their professional partners, a coupon for a free 3-day/2-night stay at the all-new Suncoast Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, and a chance to have their photos taken with PWBA players.
Professional competition begins Monday, June 25, with qualifying rounds. Players bowl six-game blocks at 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Monday, and six more games Tuesday at 11 a.m. The field is then cut to the top 24; match play for those bowlers begins Tuesday evening with an eight-game block at 6:30 p.m. Two more eight-game blocks of match play follow Wednesday, June 27, at 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.
The top five scorers following Wednesday's action advance to the championship stepladder finals Thursday, June 28, at 7 p.m. The stepladder finals air on ESPN2 Monday, July 2 at 9:00 p.m., with a repeat showing Thursday, July 5, at 1 p.m. (all TV times are Eastern).
