-Cara Honeychurch Wins First Title In 2001 In Greater San Diego Open

06/15/2001 - PWBA
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Cara Honeychurch of Australia snagged her first title in 2001 by disposing of top-seeded Anne Marie Duggan, 200-165, in the $50,000 Greater San Diego Open at Grove Bowling Center Thursday.

The 29-year-old lefthander included a five-bagger in her victory against La Habra, Calif.'s Stacy Rider in the semifinal match, 235-200, then stayed close to the pocket in the championship game while Duggan left 4-6-7 and 4-7-10 splits that she couldn't convert and struck only twice, after the match was out of reach.

"I guess you could say I got the monkey off my back finally," said Honeychurch, who had finished second twice, third once, and eighth twice in previous tournaments this spring. "I told my husband Jim on the way over that maybe I was just meant to be seeded second, after I missed the top spot Wednesday by only four pins. Perhaps it was meant to be that I get a game under my belt and get lined up before bowling for the title.

"My goal tonight was to take the lane out of play, and keep the ball as straight as I could so that I could stay near the pocket. I'm not sure if that was the same strategy as the other players had, but it was mine and it worked for me."

Honeychurch took home a $9,000 check for her efforts, while Duggan settled for $4,800. Rider, who earned the right to take on Honeychurch by defeating Kim Adler, Cocoa, Fla., and Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas, in the opening shootout, 187-181-158, earned $3,000. Dorin-Ballard was rewarded with $2,500 for finishing fourth (in the shootout match, the third-seeded bowler cannot finish lower than fourth), and Adler won $2,200.

The championship finals will be aired on ESPN2 Monday, June 18, at 9 p.m. and re-broadcast Thursday, June 21, at 1 p.m. (all TV times are Eastern).
