-Fairview Heights Welcomes Back The Professional Women Bowlers

04/26/2001 -PWBA
ROCKFORD, IL - St. Clair Bowl will again host the best women bowlers in the world when it holds the St. Clair Classic May 12 -17, 2001. Defending champion Kim Adler of Cocoa, Fla., will take on a talented field for a prize fund of $70,000. The 2000 Bowlers Journal All-American captain defeated 1999 St. Clair champion Wendy Macpherson of Henderson, Nev., 201-181 in the championship match last year for the first prize of $11,000 and a crystal bowling trophy.

The week is filled with exciting bowling, head-to-head matches, and the TV stepladder finals to decide the champion. The excitement starts Sunday, May 13, with an official PWBA practice session from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Fans are welcome to watch at no charge (however, they urged to wait for autographs and photos until the Pro-Am squads that follow).

Pro-Am squads begin Saturday, May 12, with a 3:00 p.m. squad and continue Sunday, May 13, with squads from 11:00 a.m. until 7:30 pm. Pro-Ams give local amateurs a chance to test their bowling skills against the pros while teaming up with them in a 9-pin no tap format tournament. Adults compete for money prizes, while youth bowlers play for scholarships and other prizes. Pro-Am entrants also receive a certificate signed by each professional they bowl with and a coupon for a free 3-day/2-night stay at the all-new Sun Coast Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Professional competition gets underway Monday, May 14, with two six-game qualifying rounds at 11:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Qualifying continues Tuesday at 11:00 a.m., with a cut to the top 24 scorers coming after 18 games. The cut survivors bowl head-to-head matches in match play format beginning Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m. and continuing Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. The top five following Wednesday's final squad advance to the televised stepladder finals Thursday, May 17, at 7:00 p.m. The stepladder finals will air on ESPN2, Monday, May 21 at 9:00 p.m. (Eastern) and repeat Wednesday, May 23, at 1:00 p.m. (Eastern).

Top players expected to compete in the St. Clair Classic include Dede Davidson, Las Vegas, Nev., who completed the Triple Crown in women's bowling when she captured the Sam's Town Invitational title in the last tournament of 2000, breaking several PWBA records along the way. Davidson is hoping to begin the PWBA 2001 season opener in the same manner as she completed 2000. The 2000 PWBA Player of the Year, Wendy Macpherson, will also be looking for another win at St. Clair Bowl, as will the 2000 PWBA Rookie of the Year, Cara Honeychurch of Melbourne, Australia. The "Dynamo from Down Under" captured two titles in the 2000 season and powered her way into fourth place in the player rankings.

-Smith Takes Hawaii Regional

04/26/2001 -PBA Western Region
Two weeks ago in Phoenix, Robert Smith went into the position round leading Tony Reyes. This time the shoe was on the other foot as Tony was the leader. The result was the same however, with Robert Smith throwing the first nine strikes for a 276 to win the 2nd Annual Rice Shopping Center WR Open in Lihue, Hawaii.

Smith and Reyes relied on their tour experience as they pulled away from the rest of the field. Going into the second round of matchplay, they lead third place by over 300 pins. Bob Markiewicz closed to within 145 pins at one point but that was as close as anyone was going to get.

This is Smith's sixth regional title to go with two National titles, including the 2000 US Open.
