2002 AMF Bowling World Cup Host Center Nears Completion
02/07/2002 - AMF Bowling
LONDON, ENGLAND - The AKA International Group, which is building the 24-lane Toss Bowling Hall in Riga, Latvia, that will host the 38th AMF Bowling World Cup, expects to celebrate the center's grand opening in April.
Alberts Zuks, president of AKA International Group, told Bowling World Cup tournament manager Anne-Marie Board in mid-January that Alexei Shiryaev, AMF's country manager for Latvia, visited recently "and agreed that we should be able to install the bowling lanes in March. We also expect to announce our team of corporate and civic sponsors very soon. Riga's Municipality Committee is giving us excellent support."
The state-of-the-art Toss Bowling Hall is located in southeast Riga, close to the Krasta main road and 5 kilometers (approximately 3 miles) from the city's center, near the Daugava River.
"This is a popular business and shopping area, with many supermarkets and cafeteria-style restaurants nearby. A park with huge glass displays of animated animals and toys, which is a popular destination for tourists and residents alike, is close to the massive stone building that houses the bowling center," Zuks added.
Riga mayor Gundars Bojars; Alexandr Rihters, president of the Latvian Bowling Federation; and Zuks announced at the 2001 AMF Bowling World Cup last November that Latvia would host the tournament in 2002.
The 38th AMF Bowling World Cup will be held October 20-26. It will be the first time an Eastern European nation hosts the tournament. Latvian bowlers have competed in the Bowling World Cup since 1999.
