-Sport Bowling Featured In ABC Companion Tournament

02/06/2003 - Bowling Newsline
GREENDALE, Wis. - In conjunction with its 100th Championships Tournament in Knoxville, Tenn., in 2003, the American Bowling Congress will bring back its popular companion tournament that will feature the Sport Bowling program.

The ABC/Storm Sport Challenge, featuring Storm Bowling Products as title sponsor, will use a lane condition that complies with ABC/WIBC Sport Bowling standards. Held on 12 specially installed lanes adjacent to the 48 ABC Tournament lanes in the Knoxville Convention Center, the Challenge will use a two-game sweeper type format. A doubles division has been added to this year's event.

Bowlers will compete in one of two divisions. The "A" division is designated for bowlers who average 190 and higher, and the "B" division is for players who average 189 and lower. All participants will pay a $40 entry fee, which will include daily and overall prize funds. One in five participants will cash.

The companion tournament was introduced at the 2000 ABC Championships Tournament in Albuquerque, N.M., where nearly $800,000 in prize money was distributed. The 2000 Challenge introduced Sport Bowling's challenging scoring environment. With nearly 28,000 games bowled, there were no perfect games, but three bowlers rolled 299 games. The average two-game cashing score was 395.

"We tested the Sport pattern in the 2000 event as a way to introduce people to what Sport lane conditions are all about," said ABC Group-Executive Tournaments, Communications and Marketing Ed Baur, who created the initial event. "From staff's viewpoint, it was well received. Some of the older guys knew exactly what to expect, but for the younger guys who haven't bowled in our World Team Challenge events, it certainly was a new and challenging experience. The inaugural event in 2000 was extremely popular with nearly 14,000 entries. The new doubles division should encourage even greater interest."

And the new twist that is part of sponsorship is that Storm will provide one high-performance bowling ball each day for a daily drawing. Baur said Storm has already been a major contributor in developing ideas for the event.

"You know when you get Storm's people involved in a project, they're going to be hands-on," Baur said. "Storm is truly a bowlers' company and its contributions will be more than just sponsorship dollars and high performance bowling balls. We expect Storm's input over the years will help us develop this into a truly major event."

"Storm is extremely pleased to be the title sponsor of the 2003 ABC/Storm Sport Challenge," said Bill Supper, Vice President -- Relationship Management of Storm Products, Inc. "Storm has a wonderful history with the ABC Tournament and it continues with Storm's sponsorship of the Challenge. We encourage all ABC Tournament bowlers to test their skill in this event."

The 100th ABC Championships Tournament runs from Feb. 8 through June 22, at the Knoxville Convention Center. Presenting sponsors for the 2003 ABC Tournament are the Knoxville Tourism and Sports Corporation, and the Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus Hotels/Casinos in Reno, Nev. Pilot Travel Centers, Dollywood, Calhoun's Taste of Tennessee and Steve Ellis Tours also have signed on as product sponsors.
