-Practice Sessions Help Usher In Lanes For 100Th ABC Championships Tournament

02/04/2003 - Bowling Newsline
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The echo of bowling balls hitting pins is finally roaring through the Knoxville Convention Center. With construction nearly complete for the 100th ABC Championships Tournament, hundreds of Knoxville-area bowlers turned out to help test the new lanes Tuesday morning.

"This is a great opportunity for our staff to make sure they are ready for the opening of the ABC Championships," said Tournament Director Brian Lewis. "There's really only one way to test out the new lanes and that's to throw bowling balls."

League players from the Greater Knoxville Bowling Association helped christen the new lanes, which were specially built for the ABC Championships over the past month. Opening ceremonies are Saturday for the Tournament, which will last nearly five months and bring over 60,000 bowlers to the Knoxville area.

"This was the first big effort to get everything ready for the big show," said ABC President Jim Bevins, who bowled in Tuesday's practice session. "It is fabulous to have this new Convention Center to welcome the finest people in the world, and I think those people are bowlers."

Tuesday's practice sessions kicked off the first week of activities at the ABC Championships Tournament. Two more practice sessions will take place Wednesday followed by a Young American Bowling Alliance Tournament, which will include over 200 Knoxville-area youth bowlers.

The Special Olympics National Unified Sports Bowling Tournament begins Thursday with more than 400 Special Olympics athletes, Unified Sports partners and coaches attending. The event concludes Friday morning.

Also on Friday, the Bowlers Care for Kids Celebrity Charity Tournament takes place at 7:30 p.m. Among the celebrities expected to attend are Jason Sehorn of the New York Giants, Warrick Dunn of the Atlanta Falcons and professional bowlers Kim Adler and Johnny Petraglia.

Presenting sponsors of the 2003 ABC Tournament are the Knoxville Tourism and Sports Corporation and Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus Hotel/Casinos in Reno, Nev. Other major sponsors include Pilot Corporation; Dollywood; Calhoun's Taste of Tennessee, and Steve Ellis Tours.
