Bryon Smith Wins 53Rd American Bowling Congress Masters For First Professional Title
01/19/2003 - Bowling Newsline
RENO, Nev. - After going winless in nine years on the Professional Bowlers Association Tour, Bryon Smith of Roseburg, Ore., ended his long drought by winning the 53rd American Bowling Congress Masters Sunday at the National Bowling Stadium.
Smith won the $100,000 first prize and the Frank K. Baker trophy by defeating PBA Hall of Famer and five-time Player of the Year Walter Ray Williams Jr., 236-220, in the championship match.
"I was beginning to doubt if I belonged out here on tour," Smith said. "This couldn't have come at a better time because I was thinking about giving myself another year and then maybe doing something else."
"People have told me not to worry about it, but I've set expectations for myself and I haven't really lived up to them until now." Smith's previous high finish on tour was third place in Memphis last October.
The 29-year-old right-hander went undefeated in six three-game matches to earn the top championship round qualifying spot.
Smith opened the championship match with six strikes, while Williams started with the first three strikes before a nine-count and spare in the fourth frame. Williams ran into trouble in the seventh frame when he left the 4-6-7-9 split, which he failed to convert.
"All week I bowled well but I feel like I might have let this one get away," said Williams, who was looking for his fourth major title. "I had a nice shot in the final match and I even thought the split I had was going to be a good shot. Bryon was bowling great and I had to wait for him to make a mistake-obviously it didn't happen."
Williams earned $50,000 for second and it was his seventh television appearance in 15 tournaments so far during the 2002-03 PBA Tour season.
In the opening stepladder match, Williams defeated 1993 ABC Masters champion and ABC Hall of Famer Norm Duke, 264-234. Duke earned $15,000 for fourth.
Williams then went on to defeat 2001 Amateur Bowler of the Year Jason Williams of Vashon Island, Wash., in the semi-final match, 225-178. J. Williams earned $25,000 for third.
As a major on the PBA Tour, the 2003 Masters paid a record prize fund of $386,000 and drew a field of 537 bowlers.
