-Georgia's Hargrove To Succeed Friend Shaver As ABC's Oldest Active Member

09/20/2002 - Bowling Newsline
GREENDALE, Wis. - Bill Hargrove of Clermont, Ga., is ready to accept the crown as the oldest active member of the American Bowling Congress, but he will step into that role with a heavy heart.

Hargrove, at the age of 101, is planning to compete in three ABC-sanctioned leagues in the Atlanta area this season, assuming the title as ABC's oldest bowler from his friend and former doubles partner Art Shaver, who died Aug. 25 in W. Palm Beach, Fla., of complications from a stroke at age 104.

Hargrove, like Shaver, is proof that bowling is a lifetime sport.

"I'm so ready for the season to begin," said Hargrove, who averaged 115 last season. "I'm not as good as I used to be, but I love the game and I love to compete."

In May 2001, Hargrove and Shaver experienced the highlight of their bowling careers when they teamed up to compete at the ABC Championships Tournament in Reno, Nev. At the combined age of 203 years at time, they entered the record books as the oldest doubles pair ever to compete in the historic event.

"The passing of Art was a sad day for all of his many bowling friends," said Hargrove. "But I'm honored that I could pick up where he left off as the oldest league bowler in the country."

ABC records show that approximately 2,700 of its members are 80 years or older. Hargrove, who was born on May 9, 1901, is one of four bowlers who have reached the age of 100. Dr. Jack Rogers of Lockport, Ill., will be 101 in October. Ralph Ossa of Sun City, Ariz., and Sam Pate of College Station, Texas, are both bowling leagues at the age of 100.

A year-long survey by ABC indicated there are active league bowlers age 90 and older in at least 35 states, Puerto Rico and Ontario, Canada. The oldest bowlers heading into the 2002-03 season were:
