The Right Approach...Views on the world of bowling.

Volume 1, Issue 27

By Angel Zobel-Rodriguez

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, I felt it was time for me to give thanks for another year on this planet. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours, and a wonderful beginning to the holiday season.

First, I am thankful for a family that bowls. If my husband and my son didn't have the same obsession, they would probably give me a pretty hard time about the amount of time I spend bowling, talking about bowling, or at least thinking about bowling.

I am thankful that no one except me remembers my first-year league average of 107.

I'm thankful to have enough time to give back to the sport that has given me so much.

I am thankful for the PBA's return to 90-minute telecasts, if only for the shows airing on ESPN.

I am also thankful that the PWBA prize funds now rival and often outshine the prize funds in the PBA.

I am thankful that bowlers pretty much rejected the industry's attempts at $300 striped bowling balls.

I am thankful for the great friends I have found through this sport. Many of us live thousands of miles away, but between phone calls, computer lines, and abundant flight schedules, we manage to stay close.

I am equally thankful when those friends sell me their used equipment at prices my budget can afford.

I am thankful for all the friendly advice, whether it actually works or not.

Conversely, I am thankful for all the advice, whether I actually listen or not.

I am thankful every time I throw a 600 series, and elated when all three games exceed 200.

I am thankful for weather that allows me to bowl in shorts nine months of the year without requiring me to change clothes in the restroom in order to leave the center.

I am thankful for a pro shop professional that appreciates my business, and takes the time to explain things to me without making me look dumb, even when he realizes that I don't have a clue.

I am also eternally grateful that he found a 10-year-old ball in a 10 lb. weight for the littlest bowler in my family.

I am thankful that the participants of my sport consider themselves part of a community at large, a community that takes care of its own. Although people must want to cringe when I come along selling yet another fund raiser, whether gift wrap for my son's school, or candy bars for BVL, somehow each bowler reaches into his or her pocket one more time "to help another bowler."

I am thankful that for the first time in at least five years, not a single bowling center near me went out of business this year.

I am thankful that my bowling average still exceeds my weight.

I am thankful that I live in a place where the PBA national tour, the PBA regional tour, several regional professional tournaments/tours, and the World Team Challenge all stop within an hour's drive of my home.

I am thankful for my health that allows me to keep playing this sport. Even totalling my Blazer in May left me merely sore for a good part of the summer. Nothing short of a straight jacket seems to keep me off the lanes.

I am thankful for teammates who believe we bowl to win, but if we can't win, we will at least have fun trying.

I am thankful for my teammates who bowl with me because of my average, and those who bowl with me despite it.

And finally, I give thanks to you, my readers. There may be only three of you out there, since my mom doesn't have a computer yet, but I appreciate each and every one of you.

May every day you bowl be turkey day!

Gotta Split,
