Walter Ray Williams Jr. Pockets “Extra” Cash
10/06/2000 - PBA
Although Walter Ray Williams Jr. is winless thus far in 2000, it doesn't mean he hasn't experienced some success. Williams, along with the 15 other PBA participants in this year’s Japan Cup, was invited to compete in an “extra” tournament in Tokyo following this year’s Japan Cup. Thirteen of the 16 PBA Japan Cup participants accepted the invitation and stuck around for an additional week to compete in the inaugural Kanto Dream Tournament at Shiba Bowling Center in Tokyo. The event featured JPBA (Japan Professional Bowlers Association) members, amateurs from around Japan, a handful of KPBA (Korean Professional Bowlers Association) members and the 13 PBA members. The field totaled 384 players and first place was 5,000,000 Yen (approx. $45,000 U.S.). The event featured qualifying, followed by head-to-head two-game total pinfall matches. In the end, the semifinals pitted Williams against JPBA player Ikuya Nakagawa and former PBA Rookie of the Year Chris Barnes against 41-time JPBA titlist Junichi Yajima. Both Williams and Barnes managed to advance and, in the championship match, Williams posted games of 257 and 279 to Barnes’ 236 and 197 to win by a total of 536-433. While the event didn't count as an official PBA title, Williams’ paycheck was certainly official.
