      Robert Smith was voted Bowling Writers Association of America Bowler of the Month for September by a select panel of the organization, BWAA President Lyle Zikes announced today. It is the second time this year the powerful 28-year-old right-hander from Simi Valley, Calif., has been so honored, having received the nod for February.

      Smith won his fourth Professional Bowlers Association championship by defeating Chris Barnes, Dallas, Tex., 224-222 in the title match of the Japan Cup in Tokyo, an event that featured an elite international field.

      Leanne Barrette, Pleasanton, Calif., who captured her 26th Professional Women's Bowling Association title at the Three Rivers Open in Pittsburgh, was a distant runner-up in the balloting.
