06/18/2002 - PWBA
LATHAM, NY. - Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nevada helped kick off a week of Professional Women's Bowling action by winning the Barbara Leicht-Bowers Memorial on Tuesday night at the Bowlers Club.
Formatted in a low ball elimination tournament, Macpherson won the event in the 25th round when she notched a strike while second place finisher Sabrina Duncan, New Orleans, La. bowled a nine. Macpherson earned a first place check for $1,000.
"I think this is the most fun I've had bowling in a long time," said Macpherson. "Tonight was a wonderful tribute to Barbara. I always looked forward to seeing her every year at the WIBC Queens. She was a very thoughtful, special lady that will be greatly missed."
Macpherson and Duncan were joined by PWBA members Anne Marie Duggan, Edmond, Okla. and Tiffany Stanbrough, Oklahoma City, Okla. as the final four survivors in the 21st round after 27 other participants were eliminated.
Stanbrough was cut in round 22 when she was the only player not to strike. Duggan was eliminated in the next round.
A former PWBA'er, Leicht-Bowers passed away earlier this year. The Albany, NY native was inducted into the New York State Hall of Fame in 1989 and was a 15-time Albany Bowler of the Year.
"When I decided to have the PWBA here for a tournament Barbara was the first person I told," said Carol Judge, Proprietor of the Bowlers Club. "This event was for her."
