Sabrina Duncan Voted 2002 Rookie Of The Year
02/18/2002 - PWBA
The Professional Women's Bowling Association announced today that Sabrina Duncan, New Orleans, LA has been selected as the 2002 Rookie of the Year. A relative newcomer to the sport, Duncan earned 61 percent of the PWBA player ballot to beat out Canadian Pam Marciniszyn.
"This is very exciting," said Duncan. "It's an honor and a powerful motivator to be selected Rookie of the Year by the PWBA players."
A graduate from the University of New Orleans with a degree in business administration, Duncan's road to the PWBA was less traveled in comparison to most of her tour counterparts, but, if you ask her, the decision to turn pro in 2002 has made all the difference.
A late bloomer to the sport, Duncan began kegeling in 1992. During the next eight years the right-hander would get married, invest in two pro shops and become a funeral director. However, in spite of a busy work and social life, Duncan never lost site of her dream to compete professionally. In fact, not long after she began bowling in a league in 1993, she started competing in scratch tournaments such as the Southern Regional Rhodman and the Atlanta Ladies Scratch Classic.
Following years of practice and hard work, Duncan began to see results. In 2000 she won a Master's Tour Association tournament and was regularly cashing at PWBA regionals. In 2001 she joined the regional program and boasted a third place finish at the Houston Women's Bowling Association Queens tournament.
Last season, Duncan realized her dream after 10 years of pursuit. She competed in 17 of 18 national tournaments leading all rookies in earnings, average and competition points.
"It was extremely tough to take my game to this level - both physically and mentally. It was an honor to compete against the best in the world last season and I'm looking forward to taking on the challenge again in 2003."
