-New Jersey Natives Bohn, Dorin-Ballard Named Top 2001 BWAA Bowlers Of The Year

02/06/2002 - Bowling Newsline
Two bowlers who originally made their names in home state New Jersey have been honored as the best bowlers of 2001 by the Bowling Writers Association of America.

Parker Bohn, Jackson, N.J., the only male pro bowler to win three titles last year, was named 2001 Male Bowler of the Year. Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, a North Richland Hills, Texas, resident originally from Linden, N.J., was selected as 2001 Female Bowler of the Year.

Bohn was a runaway choice with 102 first-place votes out of 126 cast. The left-hander had the highest percentage of tournament cashes with 18 out of 20 events. In addition to his three wins, Bohn was runner-up once and third twice.

Dorin-Ballard was an overwhelming choice, being named first on 120 of the 126 ballots cast in a poll of international bowling writers and broadcasters. She outdistanced Cara Honeychurch of Australia, by more than 400 points.

Bohn's victories came in the American Bowling Congress Masters, the Senior Touring Doubles and his own Empire State Open.

A distant second was Walter Ray Williams Jr., Ocala, Fla., who won the Professional Bowlers Association National Championship and the Greater Cincinnati Open. Williams was the tour's leading money winner with $144,500, just beating out Bohn who finished with $143,000.

Third place went to Pete Weber, St. Ann, Mo., who won the Great Lakes Classic and the Greater Louisville Open.

Jason Couch of Clermont, Fla., finished in fourth place. He was the tour's average leader with 221.49, edging Bohn by less then one pin. Couch won the Villages Open and finished runner-up four times.

      The final voting (based on 5-2-1 points for first-, second- and third-place votes) with first-place votes in parentheses: 1. Bohn (102) 541; 2. Williams (11) 208; 3. Weber (8) 89; 4. Couch (2) 78; 5. Chris Barnes, Wichita, Kan. (2) 54; 6. Mika Koivuniemi, Finland (1) 20.

Dorin-Ballard cashed in all 23 Professional Women's Bowling association tournaments and won seven times. Her victories included the Women's International Bowling Congress Queens and the Brunswick World Open. In addition to seven firsts, Dorin-Ballard had a pair of seconds, seven thirds, one fourth and two fifths. She qualified for the televised finals 18 times.

The tour's leading prize winner with $135,045, Dorin-Ballard also led the PWBA in average with 214.73 -- two pins better than runner-up Liz Johnson of Tonawanda, N. Y., who was third in balloting.

Honeychurch won four championships and was runner-up four times. The Australian was the fourth leading money winner with $92,565. Johnson also had four titles and was runner-up to Dorin-Ballard in high average at 212.41.

Johnson, like Honeychurch, won four titles including the Hammer Players Championship. Wendy Macpherson of Henderson, Nev., who won top female bowler honors the past four out of five years, finished a distant fourth.

      The final voting (based on 5-2-1 points) with first-place votes in parentheses: 1. Dorin-Ballard (120) 604; 2. Honeychurch (1) 194; 3. Johnson (1) 91; 4. Macpherson (1) 41; 5. Kim Terrell, Daly City, Calif. (1) 29; 6. Leanne Barrette, Pleasanton, Calif. (1) 22; 7. Michelle Feldman, Skaneateles, N. Y., (1) 16.
