Meet Robert Knight
Hi, my name is Robert Knight, although I appear to be more commonly known by my nickname "GDF" (God Darn Furriner). I was born just outside of London, England in April 1969, and compared to a great number of bowlers, started bowling quite late in life (i.e. my 20's).
I first went bowling in 1980, when, as a school kid, we were given the opportunity to choose bowling as our midweek "games" option. I only bowled for about 6 months before my parents upped and moved house (for the benefit of mine and my brothers education apparently :-), and I didn't pick up a bowling ball again for the next 10 years.
Then in 1991, I went bowling for a fun night out with a friend, and decided to join a league as a result. My interest really took off though during the course of 1992/3, when, as part of my job, I moved to LA to live and work for 8 months. It was there that I really got hooked on the game, after joining a mixed five-man team league at Gable House bowl in Torrance, CA.
I moved back to England in spring 1993, and vowed to learn as much as I could about the sport from there on. This has since involved 4 years of frequent online discussion in the Alt.Sport.Bowling newsgroup, and taking the Instructors and Coaching courses offered by the BTBA (British Tenpin Bowling Association - our UK equivalent of the ABC). I have been a fully qualified Phase III coach for about the past 4 years now.
I am now a regular participant in the ABC National tournament, which combined with my experience in LA has given me a rather unique insight in to how the sport differs between the two sides of the Atlantic.
Hopefully, I can share some of that knowledge on BowlingFans.com
