George Freeman's Expert Bowling Tips:

-Trust Yourself
9/18/2000 - By George Freeman
With every shot thrown in league, oil gets moved on the lane. "Carry down," the result of bowling balls pushing oil down the lane with every shot, will cause the ball to go longer and longer before hooking into the pocket. Lanes also "break down," when oil gets taken away after so many shots, causing your ball to hook more, or get a less reliable reaction on the lane surface. With these things in mind, it is important to know when the lanes are changing, and when to move with them.

The first thing that you have to do when you see a different reaction to the way your ball reacts is to realize whether or not you made a good shot. If you adjust off of a bad shot, it will give you a false read of the lane. Then you'll try to adjust again, and end up just confusing yourself. You have to be honest with yourself, if you know in your heart that you made a good shot, you have to change your alignment. Some bowlers are timid when it comes to making adjustments, and they end up doing it too late, usually costing them an open frame from a split they left because the ball was breaking sharper and sharper into the pocket until it went right through the nose.

How do you trust yourself? Practice. You have to know your game. You have to trust yourself and your game to know if you are throwing the ball well, then you have to have the courage to make changes to your game when you see the ball reacting differently. With the new power monster bowling balls on the market, it makes it that much tougher, because they eat oil off of the lanes that much quicker. Next week I'll give some tips on how to adjust to certain changing conditions. Till then, trust yourself :)
