George Freeman's Expert Bowling Tips:

-The Little Things Are Sometimes The Most Important
08/28/2001 - By George Freeman
During league or tournament play, we all tend to get a little lazy from time to time.  Here are some things to think about the next time you get on the lanes.

Pick up the ball with two hands.  This is something we're taught as junior bowlers, but many of us (including me from time to time) forget.  It may not sound like much, but the simple task of reaching down with two hands and picking up the ball saves extra strain on your back.  Not to mention the reduced risk of losing the ball with one hand while picking it up off the rack.

Check those inserts.  For those of you with rubber inserts, remember that these things wear down over time.  If not replaced, it will change the way you release the ball.  If you only bowl once a week, check them every couple months.  If you're in two, three, or four leagues, and practice regularly, check them once a week.  Make sure that you can't go any further than the first crease in your fingers (for full fingertip balls).

Always have tape, and cleaner.  No one's hands stay the same size all the time.  Tape is a must for any semi-serious bowler.  Tape that is left in the ball for a long period of time and then removed tends to leave behind a sticky residue, so it is a good idea to have rubbing alcohol and a towel on hand to clean out your thumbhole if you get this residue.

Have fun.  We all want to win, but remember that after the league games are over, they're over.  If you don't do well on a given night, just leave it at that, don't dwell on it.  There is always next week.

With fall seasons getting ready to kick into gear, these little things might make the coming season better for you.
