George Freeman's Expert Bowling Tips:

-Weight Guidelines For More Experienced Bowlers
06/27/2001 - By George Freeman
Last week I discussed some guidelines for bowlers who are in the market for their first ball.  However, proper ball weight is just as important to determine for the experienced bowler, even more so actually.  The common misconception regarding ball weight for advanced players is that you need the heaviest ball you can manage, up to 16 pounds.  This is simply not the case anymore.  Many top PBA players have proven that going to lighter equipment (mid-to-low 15 pounders, and even some high 14 pounders) can be just as effective.  Plus, the lighter weight provides less strain on the body, allowing you to bowl at a more proficient level much longer.  Many times what happens in a tournament format is that the bowler tires out from all the games.  They wind up making poorer shots because they simply do not have the physical strength to maintain their style and release.  The pin carry for the lighter equipment is negligible, and the physical benefits outweigh difference anyway.  Senior players will benefit from it especially.

Is going to a lighter ball right for you?  Again, it depends on both personal preference and individual physical makeup.  However, I would highly recommend at least trying it with just one ball.  There are plenty if inexpensive balls on the market today, pick one and try it.  If it isn't for you, then you haven't lost much.  But if it works, the benefits will outweigh the cost you incur immeasurably.
