Developing A Preshot Routine 05/18/2001 - By George Freeman
In any kind of bowling competition, it is important to get into a rhythm--league, tournament, or even practice. Knowing what you are going to do when you get up to the approach goes a long way towards preparing for your shot.
Different people have different preshot routines. Simply put, your preshot routine is a predetermined set of actions just prior to getting up on the approach. For some people, the preshot routine is simply wiping the bowling ball off before throwing it. For others, it is much much more complex. Your preshot routine should be something you feel comfortable with, and are willing to repeat after every shot. This is especially useful when in pressure situations. The natural tendency is to rush, getting up as quickly as possible, and therefore not taking the time to make a good shot. Having a set routine in place and following it will help your brain stay in that certain rhythm that it is accustomed to, and therefore your shot will be less rushed, and hopefully, it will pay off in the end.
Every good player has a preshot routine. If you don't have one, work one into your game, you'll be glad you did.
