 George Freeman's Expert Bowling Tips
Setting Goals 02/05/2001 - By George Freeman
Now that most leagues are at the midway point in their fall seasons, many bowlers take this time to reevaluate where they are in terms of performance. If your goal is to improve, it is important to set goals for yourself, both long and short term. Your goals will vary based on experience and ability, but here are some guidelines for setting goals for yourself.
1. Set goals that are reasonable. If you are a first-year bowler, don't try to set a goal for yourself in averaging 210 by the end of the year. Set short-term goals that are within your reach. A good goal for a beginner bowler (and actually higher level players for that matter), is to go a three-game set without missing any single pin spares. Another goal for yourself if you are an intermediate bowler (150-170), is to go a three-game set without missing any spares. As you progress, you can set goals that are harder and harder to reach. This way you can gauge where you are in the game by knowing what goals you can attain.
2. Don't get down on yourself. Let's face it, sometimes we don't achieve our goals. We're human, and you have to allow for that fact. If you don't attain your goal in the amount of time you set for yourself, then keep trying. There is an old saying that the race doesn't always go to the fastest, but to the one that keeps on running. Yes, this sport can be frustrating, but in the end, it's worth the effort we put into it.
That will give you a start. Just remember, set goals that can be reasonably achieved, and don't get down on yourself when it doesn't happen. And most of all, have fun.
