-Norton, Kulick Capture Titles In 2000 USA Bowling Championships

12/16/2000 - USABowling
Scott Norton, Cypress, Calif., became the first bowler to win both the junior and adult U.S. Amateur Championships when he joined Kelly Kulick, Union, N.J., as the 2000 adult winners Friday in the 2000 USA Bowling Championships at the National Bowling Stadium.

Norton, 18, son of Women's International Bowling Congress Hall of Famer Virginia Norton, rallied in the final match to beat Shawn Evans, Satellite Beach, Fla., to win the title. The California State University-Fullerton freshman totaled 11,886 for 56 match-play games including bonus pins while Evans had 11,871. Norton, the 1999 Junior Amateur Champion, closed the match with five consecutive strikes to secure the victory.

"This is absolutely amazing," said Norton, who topped the record field of 127 men. "I was just trying to make the team. I wad glad to put it together. I just got lucky."

Kulick, 23, a member of TEAM USA 1998, 1999 and 2000, led the 72-player women's field the entire tournament. Her 11,802 total was well ahead of Junior TEAM USA 1999 and 2000 member Kristal Scott, Painesville, Ohio. Kulick later announced after winning her title she will resign from the team to turn pro in 2001.

"After my finish here and how I did I need to go," Kulick said. "I want to go. It's more of a career, economics and stability decision. I've would love to bowl amateur events but I think I will be more successful as a pro."

Kulick is no stranger to team success. She was a gold medalist at the 1999 Pan American Games and 1999 Federation Internationale des Quilleurs World Championships. She also was a member ofMorehead State University's 1998 Intercollegiate Bowling Championships winners and a coach when the team was victorious again in 2000 crown. But she felt this was her biggest individual honor.

"This one was for me and my mother (Carol)," Kulick said. "She deserves this as much as I do. She's been my role model."

Tony Manna Jr., Omaha, Neb., finished third for the men with 11,842. He was immediately followed by Shannon Buchan, Waterloo, Iowa, with 11,803 and 1998 U.S. Amateur Champion Michael Mullin, New City, N.Y., with 11,781. Third for the women was Missy Bellinder, Fullerton, Calif., with 11,352. Fourth was Jeannette Menacho, Sacramento,Calif., with 11,268 followed by 1999 Junior U.S. Amateur Champion Shannon Pluhowsky, Phoenix, 11,236.

All 10 qualified for TEAM USA 2001 based on their USA Bowling Championships finishes. Because Kulick is resigning, sixth-place finisher Lucy Sandelin, Tampa, was moved up to the team. Chosen to join them by the special National Selection Committee were 2000 U.S. Amateur Champions Bill Hoffman, Columbus, Ohio; and Diandra Hyman, Dyer, Ind.; Derwin Pitre, Miamisburg, Ohio; Brian Kretzer, Dayton, Ohio; Jackie Edwards, Simi Valley, Calif., and Lisa Stack, Elgin, Ill. The selection committee consisted of professional players and former TEAM USA members Chris and Lynda Barnes, Wichita State University coach Gordon Vadakin, USA Bowling President Kevin Dornberger and TEAM USA head coach Fred Borden.

Final results in the 2000 USA Bowling Championships at the National Bowling Stadium. Competitors receive 20 bonus points for each match won. Top five competitors automatically earn spots on TEAM USA 2001. Those with x chosen to team by National Selection Committee. Note: Lucy Sandelin elevated to TEAM USA when champion Kelly Kulick announced she will turn pro.
