-Pitre, Kulick Stand Atop Standings in 2000 USA Bowling Championships

      TEAM USA 2000 member Derwin Pitre, Miamisburg, Ohio, and three-time TEAM USA member Kelly Kulick, Union, N.J., were the leaders Thursday night after three rounds of match play in the 2000 USA Bowling Championships at the National Bowling Stadium.

      Pitre won seven of his eight matches to move atop the men's division in the night's final game. His 10,192 total beat previous leader and TEAM USA 1998 member Shawn Evans, Satellite Beach, Calif., who had 10,149. Michael Mullin, who won the 1998 U.S. Amateur title at the Stadium, was third at 10,146 followed by Shannan Buchan, Waterloo, Iowa, at 10,021 and Brian Kretzer, Dayton, Ohio, at 9,995.

      Kulick, a member of TEAM USA 1998, 1999 and 2000, won another six of eight matches to maintain the lead she has held throughout the event. Her 10,044 total led Junior TEAM USA 1999 and 2000 member Kristal Scott, Painesville, Ohio, who had 9,778. Adult and Junior TEAM USA 2000 member and newly-crowned Star of Tomorrow Melissa Bellinder, Fullerton, Calif., and six-time TEAM USA member Lucy Giovinco, Tampa, were tied for third at 9,642. Jeanette Menacho, Sacramento, Calif., was fifth at 9,611.

      Match play for the top 32 men and 32 women concludes after the 9 a.m. squad Friday. Total pinfall, plus bonus pins (20 for each match game win) will determine the final standings including the U.S. Amateur Champions.

      The top five males and top five females automatically will make TEAM USA 2001. A National Selection Committee will choose three additional men and three additional women from among the remaining match play finalists.

      Standings after 24 match-play games including atch play records in the 2000 USA Bowling Championships at the National Bowling Stadium. Competitors receive 20 bonus points for each match won.

-Kulick, Evans Maintain Match Play Leads in 2000 USA Bowling Championships

      Three-time TEAM USA member Kelly Kulick of Union, N.J., and TEAM USA 1998 member Shawn Evans of Satellite Beach, Fla., remained atop women's and men's divisions, respectively, midway through match play Thursday in the 2000 USA Bowling Championships at the National Bowling Stadium.

      Kulick, a member of TEAM USA 1998, 1999 and 2000 who has led since the beginning of the tournament, finished the 16-game match play with 8,387. She won six of eight matches Thursday. In second place was Junior TEAM USA 1999 and 2000 member Kristal Scott, Painesville, Ohio, with 2000 Junior U.S. Amateur Champion Shannon Pluhowsky, Phoenix, third at 8,012 followed by Jeanette Menacho, Sacramento, Calif., with 7,976 and 1998 U.S. Amateur Champion Debbie Kuhn, Baltimore, 7,966.

      Evans topped the men with 8,559 thanks to five victories in eight matches. Next was 1998, 1999 and 2000 TEAM USA member Tony Manna Jr., Omaha, Neb., with 8,483. Third was 1998 U.S. Amateur Champion Michael Mullin, New City, N.Y., with 8,445 followed by defending U.S. Amateur Champion Bill Hoffman, Columbus, Ohio, at 8,443 and Brian Kretzer, Dayton, Ohio, with 8,434.

      Match play for the top 32 men and 32 women was to continue at 3:30 p.m. Thursday and again at 9 a.m. Friday. Total pinfall, plus bonus pins (20 for each match game win) will determine the final standings including the U.S. Amateur Champions.
