12/13/2002 - PWBA
ROCKFORD, Ill. - The ongoing excitement of the Professional Women's Bowling Association is reaching more and more bowling fans every year. After experiencing strong television numbers during the first half of the 2002 season, the PWBA announced today that for the fourth consecutive year, overall TV ratings have gone up.

"Year after year PWBA telecasts continue to show the passion bowling fans have for our athletes," said PWBA President John Falzone. "We're thrilled that after 22 years of business we're still showing signs of growth for our broadcast partners."

According to Neilson Media Research, PWBA telecasts averaged a .44 rating in 2002, increasing its audience by 19 percent from 2001. PWBA household impressions were equally impressive averaging 365,834 -- a 26 percent improvement.

The 2002 campaign marked the tour's 17th year on ESPN. The PWBA aired 21 national events including the Women's International Bowling Congress Queens tournament. Including re-airs, the PWBA appeared on ESPN and ESPN2 combined over 40 times..

In addition to its growing domestic audience, the PWBA widened its broadcast reach by striking a deal with the American Forces Radio and Television Service thru 2003 to carry all PWBA events. The AFRTS provides programming to 179 countries, territories and U.S. ships at sea and has a potential viewership of approximately 800,000 men and women.

PWBA events were also seen in Canada this year when WTSN joined the PWBA broadcast family in September. A leader in women's sports programming; WTSN televised the entire second half of the 2002 season and is planning on carrying the PWBA next year.

In 2003 ESPN/ESPN2 plans to carry the entire PWBA schedule including the WIBC Queens and the Women's U.S. Open U.S. Open, which will kick off the first of seven consecutive Sundays where the PWBA will be televised live on ESPN in a 90-minute time slot.
