-Castillo, Petrick Lead Standings In USA Bowling Amateur Championships

      TEAM USA member Dino Castillo held onto his lead while Jennifer Petrick regained hers after Thursday's opening match play action in the 2001 USA Bowling Amateur Championships at the National Bowling Stadium.

      Castillo, a 30-year-old bowling pro shop manager from Dallas, won six of eight matches to give him 6,766 for 32 games in the men's division including bonus pins for matches won. Petrick, a 19-year-old Stark State Community College student from North Canton, Ohio, won seven matches on her way to a 6,510 overall total. Castillo has led since the second qualifying round. Petrick was the lader after the first day of qualifying.

      TEAM USA's Tony Manna Jr., Omaha, Neb., stood second with 6,679. He was followed by Andrew Cain, Tempe, Ariz., with 6,605; Sean Rash, Anchorage, Alaska, 6,583; and David Haynes, Las Vegas, 6,569.

      Qualifying leader Shannon Pluhowsky, Phoenix, was second with 6,448. Next was third-round leader Ranae Janssen, Sioux Falls, S.D., with 6,312 followed by TEAM USA's Jeanette Menacho, Sacramento, Calif., 6,288; and Holly Hoopii, Honolulu, 6,242.

      The top 32 in each division bowl eight more match play games later Thursday and another 16 games Friday. Total pinfall, plus bonus pins (20 for each match game win) will determine the final standings including the U.S. Amateur Champions.

      The top five males and top five females automatically will make TEAM USA 2002. A National Selection Committee will choose three additional men and three additional women from among the remaining match play finalists.

-Pluhowsky, Castillo Are Qualifying Leaders In USA Bowling Amateur Championships

      Shannon Pluhowsky took over the women's lead while fellow TEAM USA member Dino Castillo maintained his No. 1 men's standing at the conclusion of qualifying Wednesday night in the 2001 USA Bowling Amateur Championships at the National Bowling Stadium.

      Pluhowsky, a 19-year-old University of Nebraska student from Phoenix, rolled 1,332 in her final six games to take the women's division lead with 4,871 for 24 games. Castillo, a 30-year-old bowling pro shop manager from Dallas, had 1,224 to lead the men with ,967.

      Tbird-round leader Ranae Janssen, Sioux Falls, S.D, was second for the women with 4,703. She was followed by Jennifer Petrick, North Canton, Ohio, with 4,665; Kari Schwager, Lincoln, Neb., 4,659; and Holly Hoopii, Honolulu, 4,645.

      Sean Rash, Anchorage, Alaska, was second for the men with 4,945. He was followed by Fero Williams, Gardena, Calif., with 4,869; TEAM USA's Tony Manna Jr., Omaha, Neb., 4,843; and Royce Rusher, Tulsa, Okla., 4,831.
