-Janssen, Castillo Stand Atop USA Bowling Amateur Championships Standings

      Ranae Janssen, Sioux Falls, S.D., and TEAM USA member Dino Castillo, Dallas, held leads midway through Wednesday's qualifying action in the 2001 USA Bowling Amateur Championships at the National Bowling Stadium.

      Janssen, a 30-year-old bowling center assistant manager, rolled 1,185 for her six games including a final 238, to give her a 3,547 overall total for 18 games. Castillo, a 30-year-old bowling pro shop manager who led the men's division after Tuesday's second round, had 1,224 to put him at 3,740.

      TEAM USA's Shannon Pluhowsky, Phoenix, held second place for the women with 3,539. Next was second-round leader Jennifer Petrick, North Canton, Ohio, with 3,537 followed by Holly Hoopii, Honolulu, with 3,491; and 1999 U.S. Amateur Champion Diandra Hyman, Lincoln, Neb., with 3,470.

      Sean Rash, Wichita, Kan., was second for the men with 3,707. He was followed by first-round leader Jeffrey Newkirk, Vincennes, Ind., with 3,704; Joel Reyes, Chula Vista, Calif., with 3,698; and Michael Remaklus, Florissant, Mo., with 3,674.

      Qualifying concludes Wednesday night with six more games after which the top 32 in each division advance to match play Thursday and Friday. Total pinfall, plus bonus pins (20 for each match game win) will determine the final standings including the U.S. Amateur Champions.

      The top five males and top five females automatically will make TEAM USA 2002. A National Selection Committee will choose three additional men and three additional women from among the remaining match play finalists.

-Ohio's Petrick, Team USA's Castillo Move Into Top USA Bowling Championships Spot

      Jennifer Petrick, North Canton, Ohio, and TEAM USA member Dino Castillo, Dallas, took over the top spots Tuesday night in the 2001 USA Bowling Amateur Championships at the National Bowling Stadium.

      Petrick, a 19-year-old student at Stark State Community College, rolled 1,248 in the second six-game block to move atop the women's division with a 2,435 total for 12 games. Castillo, a 30-year-old bowling pro shop manager, had 1,280 including a 256 in the final six games to push his tournament total to 2,516.

      TEAM USA member and 1999 U.S. Amateur Champion Diandra Hyman, Lincoln, Neb., held second place for the women with 2,375. She was followed by TEAM USA member Lisa Stack, Elgin, Ill., 2,369; Ranae Janssen, Sioux Falls, S.D., 2,362; and Holly Hoopii, Honolulu, 2,348.

      First-round leader Jeffrey Newkirk, Vincennes, Ind., was second for the men with 2,479. Sean Rash, Wichita, Kan., was third with 2,455 followed by Royce Rusher, Tulsa, Okla., 2,450; and TEAM USA member Tony Manna Jr., Omaha, Neb., 2,448.
