-Nable Takes Top Position In Squad C At $300,000 Women's U.S. Open Bowling Championship

12/03/2001 - PWBA
LAUGHLIN, N.V. - Australia's Maxine Nable is seeking her first national title. The second year pro took significant steps toward achieving that goal today by completing the second round of the Women's U.S. Open Bowling Championships as the top competitor of squad C with a 1,823 pin fall (227.87). The Aussie increased her tournament total to 3,463 (216.43) and currently ranks in third position overall with squad A still to bowl at 6 p.m. tonight.

"Today the oil seemed to hold a little better in the middle of the lane and I was able to get better carry there," said Nable. "I also made some equipment adjustments that helped especially when I used one of the new Dyno-Thane Cure balls that I had drilled prior to the start of the round."

Nable has appeared in one championship round this season where she finished fourth at the WIBC Queens in May. On the year she has two top ten finishes and has made the top 24 cut in 10 of her last 22 tournaments (45.4%).

With two squads in the books for round two Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nevada continues to hold the overall lead. The Bowler of the Decade for the 1990s closed out the morning session with a 1,675 pin fall (209.37 avg.). Macpherson's tournament sum of 3,526-pins ranks 12 pins ahead of fellow squad B member Lisa Bishop, Belleville, Michigan, who completed her eight-game block with 1,724 (215.5 avg.) and increased her tournament total to 3,514 (219.62).

"The lanes didn't play exactly the way I thought they would today," said Macpherson. "I had to make some adjustments throughout the morning because the ball seemed to hook a little more than yesterday."

In 1986 Macpherson became the youngest player ever to win a U.S. Open Bowling Championship at the age of 18. The 19-time titlest led the entire tournament field after the first day of competition.

Other notables from round two, squad B and C include Liz Johnson (4th), Cheektowaga, N.Y. who averaged 212.62 to bring her total to 3,433, Michelle Mullen (5th), Dearborn, Michigan (3,419, 213.68) and Jennifer Swanson, Shelton, Connecticut (3,418, 213.62).

The final day of qualifying for the 132-women field will be Tuesday (Dec. 4) at 8 a.m., 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. Following Tuesday's last squad, the field will be cut to the top 64 athletes who will bowl an eight-game block on Wednesday at 11 a.m. At the conclusion of Wednesday's round the field is cut again to the top 24 for round robin match play, which takes place at 11 a.m. on Thursday (Dec. 6), Friday (Dec. 7) and Saturday (Dec.8).

Once the 56-game preliminaries have been completed, the top five bowlers face off on Sunday (Dec. 9) at 11:30 a.m. in the championship rounds, which will be televised live on ESPN.

-Macpherson Leads Squad B After Two Rounds At $300,000 Women's U.S. Open Bowling Championship

12/03/2001 - PWBA
LAUGHLIN, N.V. - After 16 games Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nevada continued to pace squad B by leading the first session of round two at the Women's U.S. Open Bowling Championship with a 1,675 pin fall (209.37 avg.). Macpherson's tournament sum of 3,526-pins ranked 12 pins ahead of fellow squad member Lisa Bishop, Belleville, Michigan, who completed her eight-game block with 1,724 (215.5 avg.) and increased her tournament total to 3,514 (219.62).

"The lanes didn't play exactly the way I thought they would today," said Macpherson. "I had to make some adjustments throughout the morning because the ball seemed to hook a little more than yesterday."

In 1986 Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nevada became the youngest player ever to win a U.S. Open Bowling Championship at the age of 18. Sunday, the 19-time titlest led the entire tournament field after the first eight games of competition. Waiting in the wings to knock down pins for round two, squad C is scheduled to bowl at 1 p.m. while squad A will get to it at 6 p.m.

Entering the day in fourth place overall, Bishop was one of two players from squad B to surpass 1,700 pins in the second round. The fifth-year pro nearly started her morning with a perfect game tallying a 10-bagger before leaving a 10-pin standing on her 11th toss.

Other notables from round two, squad B include Liz Johnson, Cheektowaga, N.Y. who averaged 212.62 to bring her total to 3,433, Michelle Mullen, Dearborn, Michigan (3,419, 213.68) and 1998 PWBA Rookie of the Year Jody Ellis, South Africa (3,386, 211.62).

-Women's U.S. Open Pro-am Deemed Huge Success

12/03/2001 - PWBA
LAUGHLIN, NV. - What would it be like to bowl with one of the best professionals in the world? Over 600 participants found out at the Women's U.S. Open Pro-Am hosted this past weekend at the Riverside Resort Bowling Center in Laughlin, Nevada.

Designed to kick off the U.S. Open Bowling Championships in grand fashion, the tournament week began last Friday and Saturday (Dec. 1-2) with a two-day Pro-Am. Amateur bowlers were paired in a nine-pin no-tap doubles competition with U.S. Open players to compete for cash prizes (youth bowlers competed for trophies and other rewards). Two hundred and eleven entrants cashed in the weekend tourney collecting a total of $26,850.

"We are ecstatic at the turnout and the response that the PWBA players had," said Brian Markowitz, Director of Bowling Operations for the Riverside Resort. "All the feedback from the bowlers has been extremely positive. Everyone said they can't wait to do it again next year."

In addition to autographs and bowling tips from their favorite pros, entrants had the opportunity for an additional cost to receive an exclusive patriotic red, white and blue 2001 Women's U.S. Open bowling ball, specially designed by Storm Bowling Products. Due to the enormous success of the Pro-Am additional bowling balls had to be ordered as the on-site inventory was wiped out.

The top score among the amateurs came from Bruce Tull who chalked up a 864 nine-pin no tap series matched with a pro score of 900.

-Macpherson On Top At $300,000 Women's U.S. Open Bowling Championship

12/03/2001 - PWBA
LAUGHLIN, N.V. - In 1986 Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nevada became the youngest player ever to win a U.S. Open Bowling Championship at the age of 18. Fifteen years later, the four-time PWBA Player of the Year is making her way towards a second Open title. Broken into three tournament squads (A, B, C), Macpherson posted the top pin fall among A, B and C to take the overall tournament lead. Macpherson's total of 1,851 leads Leanne Barrette, Pleasanton, Calif. by 10 pins. Barrette, who led the A squad earlier in the day is just 31 pins ahead of Janette Piesczynski, Cheektowaga, N.Y., who closed out the first day of competition as the squad C leader.

Recognized as one of the sports most successful performers, Macpherson comes into the Open with 11 consecutive top 10 finishes and one title in 2001. She was recently named to the Bowlers Journal All-American team for the sixth consecutive year. Her eight game tournament mean of 231.37 is 18-pins above her 2001 average.

"With 56 games it's a long week so knocking down every pin early in the tournament is critical, said Macpherson. "You don't want to find yourself in the last round before a cut needing pins to advance."

"This tournament will always be special to me because it was the first time I ever won, but in spite of that I've only made the top five in an Open one other time. Hopefully today is a good sign for the rest of the week."

A winner of two tournaments this season including the Lady Ebonite Kentucky Classic and the Storm Challenge, Barrette chalked up seven of eight games with a score of 200 or above. Her best mark came in the sixth stanza when the two-time PWBA Player of the Year posted a first-round high game of 299. The 23-time titlest finished her round averaging 230.13.

"Today I just wanted to ease into the tournament," said Barrette. "I played the lanes correctly and made the right ball change after my third game. I was very pleased with my scoring but the toughest part of this game is to stay focused each day. Tomorrow I have to make sure and come as mentally prepared as I did today or a lot can change."

Piesczynski completed her eight game block with a 716 series. The PWBA rookie averaged 226.25 on the day ringing up three games of 240 or higher. The New York native has cashed in 12 of her last 18 tournaments (66.6%) and made the top 24 cut in 11 of 18 (61.1%) including the last eight straight.

"Taking time off helped me better prepare for this week," said Piesczynski. "I've been working very hard on my game, especially my spare shooting. Today I think I reaped the benefits of practicing so hard because I didn't miss a spare all day."

Qualifying for the 132-women field continues at 8 a.m., 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Monday (Dec. 3) and Tuesday (Dec. 4). Following Tuesday's last session, the field will be cut to the top 64 athletes who will bowl an eight-game block on Wednesday at 11 a.m.
