      December 02, 2001:

-Macpherson Takes Charge At $300,000 Women's U.S. Open Bowling Championship

12/02/2001 - PWBA
LAUGHLIN, N.V. - In 1986 Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nevada became the youngest player ever to win a U.S. Open Bowling Championship at the age of 18. Fifteen years later, the four-time PWBA Player of the Year is making her way towards a second Open title. Broken into three tournament squads (A, B, C), Macpherson posted the top pin fall among A and B to take the overall tournament lead. Macpherson's total of 1,851 leads Leanne Barrette, Pleasanton, Calif. by 10 pins. Barrette, who led the A squad earlier in the day is just 51 pins ahead of Lisa Bishop, Belleville, Michigan.

Recognized as one of the sports most successful performers, Macpherson comes into the Open with 11 consecutive top 10 finishes and one title in 2001. She was recently named to the Bowlers Journal All-American team for the sixth consecutive year. Her eight game tournament mean of 231.37 is 18-pins above her 2001 average.

"With 56 games it's a long week so knocking down every pin early in the tournament is critical, said Macpherson. "You don't want to find yourself in the last round before a cut needing pins to advance."

"This tournament will always be special to me because it was the first time I ever won, but in spite of that I've only made the top five in an Open one other time. Hopefully today is a good sign for the rest of the week."

Barrette, who earlier in the day missed a perfect game by one pin (299) is competing in her 15th U.S. Open. The 23-time titlest averaged 230.13 in the morning session.

Arguably one of the tour's most underrated players Bishop was the only player among the top ten to post eight games with a 200 score or better. The fifth-year pro led all PWBA'ers in the "200 Club" last month at the Brunswick Women's World Open when she produced 48-of-56 games at 200-plus.

One of the tournaments' early surprises is the play of Barbara Batt, Jacksonville, Florida. Competing in only her third tournament this year, Batt ranks fourth thus far with a 1,765 pin fall and a 220.62 average.

Qualifying for the 137-women field resumes at 6 p.m. when squad C takes the floor. Qualifying rounds for all three squads will continue at 8 a.m., 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Monday (Dec. 3) and Tuesday (Dec. 4). Following Tuesday's last session, the field will be cut to the top 64 athletes who will bowl an eight-game block on Wednesday at 11 a.m. At the conclusion of Wednesday's round the field is cut again to the top 24 for round robin match play, which takes place at 11 a.m. on Thursday (Dec. 6), Friday (Dec. 7) and Saturday (Dec.8).

Once the 56-game preliminaries have been completed, the top five bowlers face off on Sunday (Dec. 9) at 11:30 a.m. in the championship rounds, which will be televised live on ESPN.

-Barrette Leads Squad A At $300,000 Women's U.S. Open Bowling Championship

12/02/2001 - PWBA
LAUGHLIN, N.V. - Leanne Barrette, Pleasanton, Calif. got off to an auspicious beginning at the 2001 Women's U.S. Open Bowling Championship. The 23-time titlest finished her first eight games of qualifying averaging 230.13 with a 1,841 pin fall. Broken into three squads, Barrette closed out her first day's work as the squad A leader. Barrette's tally was 100 pins better than Cathy Dorin-Lizzi, Linden, New Jersey and Kim Terrell, Daly City, Calif. who each averaged 216.37.

"Today I just wanted to ease into the tournament," said Barrette. "I played the lanes correctly and made the right ball change after my third game."

A winner of two tournaments this season including the Lady Ebonite Kentucky Classic and the Storm Challenge, Barrette chalked up seven of eight games with a score of 200 or above. Her best mark came in the sixth game when the two-time PWBA Player of the Year posted a 299.

"I was very pleased with my scoring but the toughest part of this game is to stay focused each day. Tomorrow I have to make sure and come as mentally prepared as I did today or a lot can change."

After starting her session with a 548 series Dorin-Lizzi came on strong averaging 232 in her last five games including closing out the day with a 739 series. Terrell, who has cashed and made the top 24 cut in 20 of her last 21 tournaments (95.2%) was the only competitor in squad A to post four games with a score of 230 or higher.

Qualifying for the 137-women field resumes at 1 p.m. when squad B will compete. At 6 p.m. squad C takes the floor.Qualifying rounds for all three squads will continue at 8 a.m., 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Monday (Dec.
