-Lane 1 Bowling Maintains Lead At 2002 ABC/BWTC Grand Championship

11/12/2002 - Bowling Newsline
LAS VEGAS -- With the conclusion of Tuesday's Baker Scoring System match play rounds, the field has been narrowed from 14 to eight teams in the 2002 American Bowling Congress/Brunswick World Team Challenge Grand Championship at the Gold Coast Bowling Center.

Lane 1 Bowling of Tempe, Ariz. (Andrew Cain, Chris Klerk, Larry Hoffman, Warren Eales, Jeff Piroozshad, and Jordan Nassberg) continued their stellar play with a 12,401 overall total and a 16-12 match play record.

In Baker Scoring System competition, five team members bowl two frames each to complete a single game. All Baker matches consist of two games with 20 bonus pins awarded for each game won and 20 additional points for the match total (a possible 60 bonus pins per match).

Cain, the reigning U.S. Amateur Champion, said his team's chemistry was the key to keeping the lead in Baker match play.

"We made sure we kept the energy flowing today," said Cain. "All of our guys are strong team bowlers, and that's what you need to win this thing."

Cain said his Lane 1 team is prepared to finish strong in the tournament's final day.

"We're really excited to be in the lead considering the field we're up against," he said. "But we also know we can't let up. There's too much talent left in the field."

Norms Proshop, East Meadow, N.Y., compiled a 9-5 match play record to move from fourth place to second at 12,232. The squad features Brett Wolfe, winner of the 2002 ABC Masters, and Vernon Peterson, a former U.S. Amateur Champion. Alex Cavagnaro, Bill O'Neill, and Rob Piroozshad round out the squad.

"Our team really jelled as a team in the Baker games," said Wolfe, who currently bowls on the Professional Bowlers Association Tour. "All we need to concentrate on is making good shots. Everything else will fall into place."

After Wednesday morning's Baker match play round, the top three teams will be determined for the stepladder finals at 7 p.m. (EST).

The ABC/Brunswick World Team Challenge was created to showcase the nation's top bowling teams. During the 2002 season more than 600 teams entered the 14 regional qualifiers to earn a birth in the Grand Championship. The winner is crowned bowling's world match play team champion.
