Grijalva Climbs Ladder To Win Second Major Of Year
11/02/2000 - PWBA
ROCKFORD, IL - Tennelle Grijalva, Orange, Calif., won three matches to win her second major title of the year (1st major-U.S. Open) in the Hammer Players Championship at The Cherry Bowl in Rockford, Ill., defeating Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nev., in the championship match 248-171 Thursday evening. This loss gives Macpherson her fifth second place finish after qualifying first for the televised finals. This win is Grijalva's second win of the year and her second career title, winning two of the three highest paid tournaments of the year.
"It's unbelievable," said an astonished Grijalva. "Patience was the key tonight due to the tough conditions of the lanes. I feel I had an advantage coming from the first match to get a feel for the lanes."
In the first three-way shootout match, Grijalva faced two veteran players, Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Tex., and Tish Johnson, Northridge, Calif. Grijalva and Dorin-Ballard started out even while Johnson did not fare as well opening the first three frames. Dorin-Ballard kept a narrow lead over Grijalva before leaving an open with the 4-6-7-10 split in the ninth frame. Grijalva tossed four in a row closing out Dorin-Ballard and Johnson 246-214-169, advancing to the semi-final match.
In the semi-final match, Grijalva faced yet another veteran player, Anne Marie Duggan, Edmond, Okla. Both players started the match with an open in the first frame. Duggan took an early lead when Grijalva opened in the third and fourth frames with splits. Duggan kept the lead up to the sixth frame by 29 pins before leaving the greek church in the seventh frame opening the door for Grijalva. Grijalva struck in the sixth through ninth frames taking a 21 pin lead. Only needing a mark to win the match, Grijalva spared and struck closing out Duggan 195-161.
The championship match brought Grijalva to face one of the toughest competitors of the year, 1990's Bowler of the Decade and current money leader, Wendy Macpherson. Macpherson struggled to find the pocket, going Brooklyn on four of her first six shots of the match but was able to stay within 8 pins. Grijalva threw the last seven in a row closing out Macpherson 248-171, winning the first place prize money of $16,000.
"This win feels great," said Grijalva. "I was able to stay calm, be patient and make good shots. This check is going towards my wedding."
Grijalva is engaged to be married this December 16th.
