-Davidson Leapfrogs To The Front At $50,000 Las Cruces New Mexico Open

10/31/2001 - PWBA
LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Dede Davidson, Las Vegas, Nevada took control of the leader board after fourth round of the $50,000 Las Cruces New Mexico Open. Davidson was a perfect 8-0 in match play (Editor's note - players earn 30 bonus pins for each match won during match play rounds) helping to increase her tournament total to a 5,929 pin fall and a 218.80 average.

"I was in a great rhythm tonight," said Davidson. "I like bowling on the 40-foot pattern because I don't have to force my shot. I'm getting great ball reaction without having to overcompensate. The last few I've had trouble with the shorter patterns, but this week it's all falling into place."

Seeking her first title of the 2001 season, Davidson holds a 234-pin lead over Tish Johnson, Northridge, Calif. who last week finished fourth in the Hammer Players Championship and is competing in her 216th consecutive tournament. Johnson's 26-game totals include a 5,695 and 212.11. She went 6-2 in the evening's matches.

Falling back to third place is Australia's Cara Honeychurch. Honeychurch was the tournament leader after three rounds and currently is 12-pins (5,683) behind Johnson. The Aussie went 5-3 in match play and is averaging 212.80.

Moving up to fourth place is Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N.Richland Hills, Texas with 5,577 and 207.57. The leader in the PWBA this season in titles (6), earning ($105,870)), competition points (15,035) and averages (214.80), Dorin-Ballard is attempting to qualify for her 17th televised final in 21 tournaments.

Rounding out the top five is the reigning Las Cruces New Mexico Open champion Kim Adler, who closed out the day with a 6-2 record, a 5,570 pin fall and a 207.30 average.

Tournament action will resume on Wednesday as the top 24 go at it with two more eight-game blocks of match play at 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. At the conclusion of match play, the top five bowlers compete on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the championship rounds. ESPN2 will tape the championships and later broadcast them on Monday, November 5 at 8 p.m. and November 11 at 2:00 a.m. ESPN will carry the finals on November 6 at 2:30 p.m. (all times are EST).

-Honeychurch Continues Her Charge At $50,000 Las Cruces New Mexico Open

10/31/2001 - PWBA
LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Is Las Cruces the PWBA city for south paws? Only time will tell, but after 18 games lefty Cara Honeychurch, Australia leads the $50,000 Las Cruces New Mexico Open. The "thunder from down under" completed round three with a tournament total of 3,872 and a 215.11 average. Honeychurch holds an 80-pin lead over fellow Aussie Carol Gianotti-Block who has posted 3,792 and 210.66.

"It's nice to see several lefties at the top of the leader board," said Honeychurch. "We haven't really had this kind of impact on a tournament since the Lady Ebonite Classic in Kentucky. I'm not sure why the left-handers are scoring better because every bowling center is different. I'm playing the lanes much deeper than I normally do because we're playing a longer pattern this week."

Trailing behind Gianotti-Block are lefties Dede Davidson, Las Vegas Nevada and Tish Johnson, Northridge, Calif. who are tied for third with 3,770 and 209.44. In fifth is Oklahoma City's Tiffany Stanbrough, who also is left-handed and has recorded 3,738 and 206.44.

Honeychurch has made 12 championship round appearances this season, second only to Carolyn Dorin-Ballard (16), N. Richland Hills, Texas. In 2001 she ranks second in titles (4), earnings ($82,665), competition points (13,560) and averages (212.64). Gianotti-Block, Davidson and Stanbrough all are seeking their first titles of 2001 while Johnson has one championship to her credit.

Reigning Las Cruces New Mexico Open champion Kim Adler, Cocoa, Fla., is just off the pace in 11th place with 3,642 and 202.33. Adler is tied with Albuquerque's Dana Miller-Mackie. Both are 96-pins from breaking into the top five.

Tournament action will resume tonight as the top 24 begin the first of three rounds of match play starting at 6:30 p.m. and continuing with two more eight-game blocks on Wednesday (11 a.m., 6:30 p.m.).
