-Grijalva Captures Lead In The Hammer Players Championship

      ROCKFORD, IL - Tennelle Grijalva, Orange, Calif., averaged 217.5 for eight games to capture the second round lead in the Hammer Players Championship at The Cherry Bowl in Rockford, IL, Monday evening. Grijalva had high games of 257, 245, 228, 227, 226, and 214 to take the lead by 23 pins over Tish Johnson, Northridge, Calif. Johnson had high games of 275, 243, 239, 224, 223 to average 223.62 to move thirteen spots into second.

      "I'm excited to be bowling so well," commented Grijalva. "I wasn't aware I was even close to leading. I'm not paying attention to other scores. I'm trying to stay around the pocket, cover my spares and to be patient with each shot."

      First round leader, Anne Marie Duggan, Edmond, Okla., fell two spots into third while Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nev., averaged 214.25 to move one spot into fourth. Moving two spots into fifth is Carol Norman, Ardmore, Okla.

      The field of 62 professionals return Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. to bowl the last eight games of qualifying. The field will then be cut to the top 24 and will return Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m. to bowl the first round of match play.


-Duggan Takes First Round Lead In The Hammer Players Championship

      ROCKFORD, IL - Anne Marie Duggan, Edmond, Okla., averaged 218 for eight games to take the first round lead in the Hammer Players Championship at Cherry Bowl in Rockford, Ill, Monday afternoon. Duggan had high games of 247, 244, 234, 228 to help her take the lead by 32 pins over Lynda Barnes, Wichita, Ks. Barnes averaged 214 to claim the second position.

      "It's nice to get off to a good start," said Duggan. "The scores were low today, it took a consistent shot to score. I was fine as long as I didn't force the shot. I needed to let the ball come off clean off my hand."

      In the third and fourth positions are Leanne Barrette, Pleasanton, Calif., and Tennelle Grijalva, Orange, Calif. Barrette averaged 211.62 and Grijalva 211.12. 1990's Bowler of the Decade, Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nev., averaged 210.75 for the fifth spot.

      The lady professionals return Monday evening at 5:30 p.m. to bowl the second round of qualifying which consist of eight games. The last round of qualifying will take place Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. The field will then be cut to the top 24 and will return Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m. for the first round of match play.

      The Hammer Players Championship is the ninth stop of the Fall Tour of a ten-week swing finishing up with The Sam's Town Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev.
