-Liz Johnson Claims Hammer Players Championship

10/24/2001 - PWBA
ROCKFORD, IL - In what can only be described as a "clutch performance" Liz Johnson took home the title at the 2001 Hammer Players Championship. The Cheektowaga, N.Y. native defeated Michelle Feldman, Skaneateles, N.Y. 205-202 in the championship match and took home a first place check for $13,000. The title was the 27-year-old's 10th of her career, fourth this season and second major.

"This title has to be on of my best," said Johnson. "Winning a major is something not everyone gets a chance to do during a career. I feel very fortunate to win a title in the home of the PWBA."

After leaving the first two frames open, Johnson found herself trailing Feldman by 19-pins entering the ninth stanza. However, in one of this season's best performances under pressure, the 1996 PWBA Rookie of the Year pulled off a four-bagger and put the pressure back on Feldman. With the championship on the line, the eight-time titlest failed to pull off a double in the tenth, settling for second place and a check for $7,000.

"Michelle has been bowling very well lately," said Johnson. "I knew if I was going to have a chance to win I had to stay focused through the whole match. Luckily I had a chance to put the pressure on her in the tenth."

Entering the championship round as the No. 2 seed, Johnson faced Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas in the semi-finals and defeated the PWBA's title leader 244-183. She earned the No. 2 spot by tallying the week's best match play record of 16-7-1 along with an 11,028-pin fall and a 219.43 average.

Dorin-Ballard, who was appearing in her PWBA-record breaking 16th televised finals, took home a third place purse worth $4,600. She started the evening by knocking off fourth and fifth seeds Kelly Kulick, Union, N.J. and Tish Johnson, Northridge, Calif. 233-152-171 in the opening shootout. Johnson earned $4,200 while Kulick took home $3,700.

The Hammer Players Championship finals will be televised on ESPN2 on Monday, October 29 at 8 p.m. (EST) and Tuesday, October 30 at 7 a.m. The next stop on the PWBA tour is the Las Cruces New Mexico Open taking place from October 28 to November 1.

10/24/2001 - PWBA
ROCKFORD, IL - Michelle Feldman, Skaneateles, N.Y. went wire to wire during the preliminaries of the $90,000 Hammer Players Championship to earn the No. 1 seed for Wednesday night's televised championship round.       "It's very tough to lead a tournament from beginning to end," said Feldman. "During the fifth round I lost a lot of ground so tonight I just wanted to concentrate on making the show. I made a point of limiting my mistakes and fortunately Liz didn't catch me."
