-Feldman In Control At $90,000 Hammer Players Championship

10/22/2001 - PWBA
ROCKFORD, IL - With two rounds in the books Michelle Feldman maintained her lead at the $90,000 Hammer Players Championship by knocking down 2,120 pins and averaging 232.50 thru 16 games. Feldman holds a 184-pin margin over Marianne DiRupo, Succasunna who closed out the day with a 3,536 and a 221.00 average.

"I never get too excited about leading a tournament in the early rounds," said Feldman. "We still have 32 games to play and anything can still happen."

Coming off a win last week at the Three Rivers Open, Feldman is seeking her third title of the 2001 campaign and first "major" of her career. This season Skaneateles, N.Y native ranks sixth in earnings ($44,485), seventh in competition points (9,615.5) and ninth in averages (207.51)

DiRupo, whose last title came at the 1998 Visionary Bowling Classic, chalked up 1,780 pins during the evening block. Her best effort this season was a second place finish in June at the Greater Memphis Open.

Ranking in third and fourth place are Liz Johnson, Cheektowaga, N.Y. (3,512) and Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nevada (3,512). Johnson leads the tour in earnings plus TV incentives with $115,527. She has three titles in this year and last month became just the third player in PWBA history to bowl a perfect game during a nationally televised match.

A four-time Player of the Year, Macpherson has 19 career titles to her credit, however, in spite of her widespread success the 1990s Player of the Decade has never won the Hammers Players Championship, finishing as the runner-up four times. Rounding out the top five is Jennifer Swanson, Shelton, Connecticut. Swanson completed the round with a 3,511 total and a 217.68 average.

Rockford's Kris Hall (Rockford) completed the first two rounds with a 3,238 pin fall and a 202.37 average to position her in 26th place. Other area PWBA competitors Sandy Postma (Lansing), Lisa Stevens (Charles), Cindy Brown (Hampshire), Jackie Snyder (Cooksville), Jan Schmidt (Rochelle) and Holly Milz (Janesville, WI) all finished the day in contention to make the top 24 cut.

The Players Championship will continue at the Cherry Bowl on Monday at 10 a.m. with the last eight-game qualifying round. Following Monday morning's games, the field will be cut to the top 24 for match play, starting Monday night (6:30 p.m.) and continuing Tuesday for two more rounds at 10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. At the conclusion of match play, the top five bowlers compete on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the championship rounds. ESPN2 will tape the championships and later broadcast them on Monday, October 29 at 8 p.m. (EST) and Tuesday, October 30 at 7 a.m.

-Feldman Leads $90,000 Hammer Players Championship After Round 1

10/22/2001 - PWBA
PITTSBURGH, PA - Coming off a win at the Three Rivers Open last week at Pittsburgh, Michelle Feldman, picked up where she left off by taking the first round lead today at the $90,000 Hammer Players Championship. Feldman finished the eight-game block with a 1,917 pin fall and leads Karen Stroud, Victoria, Texas by 144 pins.

"I was very loose coming into today. Anytime you just won a tournament, it's a little easier to play the next week," said Feldman. "I was getting great ball reaction and didn't have to make too many adjustments throughout the round. I just hope the lanes play the same way tonight."

A winner of two titles this season, Feldman's tournament average of 239.62 crushed the rest of the field by 18 pins. On the year the Skaneateles, N.Y. native ranks ninth among all PWBA'ers with a 207.41 clip.

After failing to make the top 24 cut last week, Stroud bounced back with a strong start tallying 1,773 and a 221.62 average. Trailing Stroud by six pins and in third place is Tammy Turner, Ogden, Utah with 1,767 and 220.87. Turner has been one of the tour's top players in recent weeks. The four-time titlest has five consecutive top 15 finishes and has competed in the championship round in two of the last four weeks.

Cheryl Daniels, West Bloomfield, Michigan and Jennifer Swanson, Shelton, Connecticut round out the top five places as the two tied for fourth place with a 1,763 total. High games of the day belonged to Nikki Gianulias, Vallejo, Calif. and 1997 champ Marianne DiRupo, Succasunna, New Jersey who each chalked up a 290.

Rockford's Kris Hall (Rockford) completed the morning session with a 1,656 pin fall and a 207 average to position her in 22nd place.

The Players Championship will continue at the Cherry Bowl tonight with round two action starting at 5:30 p.m. On Monday at 10 a.m. the last eight-game qualifying round will take place.
