-Feldman Takes Home Title At $50,000 Three Rivers Open

10/18/2001 - PWBA
PITTSBURGH, PA - Its been three months since Michelle Feldman had won a title. Thursday night, the Skaneateles, N.Y. native claimed her second championship of the season and eighth of her career when she defeated Tammy Turner, Ogden, Utah 206-191 at the $50,000 Three Rivers Open.

"I'm thrilled to have won here," said Feldman. "I had a lot of family and friends here watching me tonight and winning this tournament was very special."

A winner last May at the Miller High Life Open, Feldman was making her second televised appearance of the 2001. For her efforts the 25-year old earned a first place check for $9,000 and perhaps more importantly 1,000 competition points. Entering the finals as the No. 1 seed, Feldman completed the 42-game preliminaries with a 9,777 pin fall, a 16-8 match play record and a 221.35 average. With her victory Feldman will move into the top eight among all PWBA'ers in competition points and position herself to likely be a part of the $25,000 Brunswick Shootout on November 10.

Facing Turner for the first time in a televised match, Feldman jumped out to an early lead, starting the bout with a Turkey while Turner spared in the first and third frames but opened in the second. Later in the match Feldman provided one last opportunity for Turner to win by leaving the eighth open, however the four-time titlest failed to respond with the needed double to win the championship.

"I knew I had to start off well against Tammy. I could tell from the way she was bowling in the shootout that she was going to be in the finals. She was loose and confident and looked like she was getting great ball reaction," stated Feldman.

Turner made her championship appearance by defeating Liz Johnson, Cheektowaga, N.Y. in the semi-finals 194-178. In the opening shootout she upended defending champ Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas and Kim Terrell, Daly City, Calif. 247-211-187. Turner was making her second TV appearance in her last four tournaments. She earned $4,800 for her second place finish while Johnson (3rd), Dorin-Ballard (4th) and Terrell (5th) took home $3,000, $2,500 and $2,200 respectively.

ESPN2 will be televising the championship round at the Princess Lanes on Monday, October 22, at 8:00 p.m. (EST) and October 27 at 2:00 a.m. (EST). The next stop on the PWBA tour is the $90,000 Hammer Players Championship in Rockford, Illinois, October 19-24.

-Feldman Earns Top Seed At $50,000 Three Rivers Open

10/18/2001 - PWBA
PITTSBURGH, PA - Prior to Wednesday night, Michelle Feldman, Skaneateles, N.Y., had been a No. 1 seed once during the 2001 PWBA season. Thursday evening, the seven-time titlest will compete in the championship round of the $50,000 Three Rivers Open as the tournament's top player. Feldman secured the position after completing the 42-game preliminaries with a 9,777 pin fall, a 16-8 match play record and a 221.35 average.

The 25-year-old will be seeking her second title of the season. Her first came on May 24 when she won the Miller High Life Open. This season Feldman ranks seventh in earnings ($35,485) and ninth in competition points (8,617) and averages (206.62).

"I'm thrilled to be back in the championship round," said Feldman. "It's been awhile. It was nice to bowl well all week and feel like I was back in contention again."

      Feldman will be joined by Liz Johnson, Cheektowaga, N.Y. (2nd - 9,734), Kim Terrell, Daly City, Calif. (3rd - 9,656), Tammy Turner, Ogden, Utah (4th - 9,596), and Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas (5th - 9,572).

Johnson will be attempting to win her third title of 2001 and is returning to the championship round after going three consecutive tournaments without a top 10 finish. She ranks third among PWBA'ers in titles with three and this season became just the third player in the tour's history to roll a 300 in a televised title match.

Terrell has appeared in just two televised finals this season with her best performance coming at the WIBC tournament in May where she finished third. Turner will also be making her second trip to the TV finals. A runner up for the 1996 PWBA Player of the Year honor, the former college all-American has been hindered by a back injury in the last two years, but has finished in the top 15 in her last four tournaments.

Dorin-Ballard has been the PWBA's best player this season. She leads the tour in titles (6), earnings ($99,070), competition points (13,710) and averages (214.48). A victory at the Open would tie her with Patty Costello for the most PWBA titles in a single season. Her appearance on TV will her 15th in the last 18 tournaments, tying Wendy Machperson's PWBA record set last season.

The ESPN2 taping of the championship round will begin at the at the Princess Lanes at 7 p.m.(EST) on Thursday. ESPN2 will broadcast the championships on Monday, October 22, at 8:00 p.m. (EST) and October 30 at 7:00 a.m. (EST).
