-Feldman Grabs Lead At $50,000 Three Rivers Open

10/17/2001 - PWBA
PITTSBURGH, PA - After staying in the top five for the last two days, Michelle Feldman finished the fifth round today as the tournament leader as she recorded a 7-1 match play record (Editor's note - players earn 30 bonus pins for each match won during match play rounds) and 1,845 pins to give her a tournament total of 7,862 at the $50,000 Three Rivers Open.

Feldman's tally gives the Skaneateles, N.Y. native a 97-pin lead over fellow New Yorker Liz Johnson, who completed the six-game block with a 1,781 pin fall and a 219.55 average.

A winner earlier this year at the Miller High Life Open, a top five finish for Feldman is likely to push her into the top eight in PWBA competition points and put the seven-time titlest in position to qualify for the $25,000 Brunswick Shootout on November 10.

"Right now I'm not thinking about anything else but bowling well tonight," said Feldman. "It's not important to me to be the number one seed, I just want to make the top five and have a chance to win the tournament. Mainly, my strategy tonight is going to keep all my scores above 200 and not have a real bad game that knocks me back four or five spots."

Ranking behind Johnson in third place is four-time PWBA Player of the Year Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nevada. Macpherson, who last week won the Columbia 300 Open, was a perfect 8-0 in today's matches and moved up from ninth place. Her 7,698 total puts the 1990s Bowler of the Decade seven pins ahead of Australia's Maxine Nable (7,691).

Holding onto fifth place is Anne Marie Duggan with 7,670. Duggan's jump to the top five comes after ranking 23rd thru 18 games of qualifying.

Just off the top five are Kim Terrell, Daly City, Calif (7,650), Tammy Turner, Ogden, Utah (7,642), defending champion Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas (7,607) and Cara Honeychurch, Australia (7,603).

The Open will continue at the Princess Lanes tonight with the last match play round starting at 6:30 p.m. At the conclusion of match play, the top five finishers compete on Thursday (Oct. 18) at 7 p.m. for the championship rounds. ESPN2 will tape the championships and later broadcast them on Monday, October 22, at 8:00 p.m. (EST) and October 30 at 7:00 a.m. (EST).
