-Defending Champ Takes Over During The Second Round Of The Three Rivers Open

      PITTSBURGH, PA - Round two proved to be a success for Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas. The runner up for the 2000 Player of the Year award and the defending champion took over the tournament lead at the end of 12 games of the $50,000 Three Rivers Open.

      Dorin-Ballard, who leads the PWBA in titles this season with six, completed the evening session by earning 1,305 pins giving her a first day total of 2,676.

      "Consistency is very important during the qualifying rounds," said Dorin-Ballard. "I averaged somewhere in the 220s throughout the day and if I can keep that up tomorrow I should be in good position for match play."

      Trailing Dorin-Ballard by just three pins, Michelle Feldman, Skaneateles, N.Y. closed out Monday with a 2,673 pin fall and a 222.75 average. Feldman is seeking her second title of the 2001 season, winning the Miller High Life Open most recently in May.

      Maxine Nable, Australia fell back to third place after leading the tournament in round one. The Aussie follows Dorin-Ballard by 17 pins (2,659) and her tournament average of 221 is 26 pins above her 2001 average of 195. Fourth place belongs to Kim Terrell, Daly City, Calif. with a 2,641 pin fall while Rachel Perez, San Marcos, Texas is in fifth with a 2,623.

      Just off the top five are Cathy Dorin-Lizzi (6th - 2,619), Linden, N.J. and Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nevada (7th - 2,589). Macpherson posted the second highest score of round with a 277, one less than the North Carolina native Julie Jackson, who scored a 278.

      Area PWBA competitors Jackie Mitskavich (Dubois - T15th, 2,512), Crystal Sciaretti (Pittsburgh - 41st, 2,261) and Sharon Cowen (Lower Burrell, 41st, 2,126) all finished the day in contention to make the top 24.

      Qualifying continues at the Princess Lanes on Tuesday (Oct. 16), at 11 a.m. Following Tuesday morning's games, the field will be cut to the top 24 for match play, starting Tuesday night (6:30 p.m.) and continuing for two more rounds on Wednesday (Oct. 17, 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.).

      At the conclusion of match play, the top five finishers compete on Thursday (Oct. 18) at 7 p.m. for the championship rounds. ESPN2 will tape the championships and later broadcast them on Monday, October 22, at 8:00 p.m. (EST) and October 30 at 7:00 a.m. (EST)

-Maxine Nable Leads Three Rivers Open After Round One

      PITTSBURGH, PA - At the end of the first round of the $50,000 Three Rivers Open, Australia's Maxine Nable took the early lead in the 46-woman field by finishing the six game block with a 1,414 pin fall and a 235.66 average.

      Nable, who is in search of her first title of her pro career, leads Laura Moriarty (1,372), Daytona Beach, Fla. by 42-pins. Her current tournament average is 46 pins ahead of her season tally of 189.09

      "It feels good to get off to a good start," said Nable. "I haven't had a strong opening in any tournament all year. I know it's still early, but it's nice to be in the lead for now."

      Trailing Moriarty by one pin and in third place is defending champion Carolyn Dorin-Ballard (1,371), N. Richland Hills, Texas. A two-time winner at the Three Rivers Open, Dorin-Ballard is the PWBA's hottest player with six titles to her credit and the tour leader in earnings ($103,070), competition points (13,710) and averages (214.55). Rounding out the top five is Michelle Feldman (1,344), Skaneateles, N.Y. and Kelly Kulick (1,331), Union, N.J. who are in fourth and fifth place respectively.

      Kulick came within one pin of bowling a perfect 300-game in her final game of the round. The three-time member of Team USA had eleven strikes in a row before leaving the ten pin standing on her last toss of the round.

      Area PWBA competitors Jackie Mitskavich (Dubois - 11th, 1,291), Crystal Sciaretti (Pittsburgh - 32nd, 1,162) and Sharon Cowen (Burrell, 41st, 1,092) all finished the day in contention to make the top 24.
