-Macpherson Stays In Front In Columbia 300 Open

10/09/2001 - PWBA
LANCASTER, OH - Tiki Lanes has always been special to Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nevada. Last year the four-time PWBA Player of the Year became just the second player in PWBA history to surpass the million dollar mark in career earnings when she finished in second at the 2000 Columbia 300 Open. This year, Macpherson leads the Columbia 300 Open after four rounds of competition.

The 1990s Player of the Decade fashioned a 1,733 pin fall in Tuesday evening's eight-game match play block and a 5-3 record (Editor note - players earn 30 bonus pins for each match won during match play rounds) to give her a 5,766 total and a 40-pin lead over Kelly Kullick, Union, N.J.

"My philosophy in every tournament is to focus on making the top five," said Macpherson. "You can't win a tournament unless you qualify for the finals. It's great to be in front right now, but tomorrow's matches will determine whether or not I had a good week."

In spite of finishing the day in second place, Kullick chalked up the highest total of the second round with a 1,842 pin fall. The two-time Team USA member is 28 pins ahead of Michelle Feldman, Skaneateles, N.Y., who posted a 4-3-1 record and is averaging 213.96. Feldman, along with Tammy Turner produced the high games of the round with 279s respectively.

Turner started the evening in 13th place but climbed up the charts to fourth after averaging 231 in the block. The Ogden, Utah native is just four pins ahead of Anne Marie Duggan, Edmond, Oklahoma, who ended the night with a 5,638 total.

Cheryl Daniels, West Bloomfield, Michigan, and Janette Piesczynski, Cheektowaga, N.Y., posted the best match play records of the round going 6-2. Daniels is currently in seventh place while Piesczynski one spot behind in eighth.

Tournament action continues at the Tiki Lanes on Wednesday (Oct. 10) for two more eight-game blocks of match play at 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. At the conclusion of match play, the top five finishers compete on Thursday (Oct. 11) at 7 p.m. in the championship rounds. ESPN2 will tape the championships and later broadcast them on Monday, October 15, at 8:00 p.m. (EST).

-Four-time PWBA Player Of The Year, Macpherson, Takes Tournament Lead In Columbia 300 Open

10/09/2001 - PWBA
LANCASTER, OH - After falling from the top spot in round two, Henderson, Nevada's Wendy Macpherson regained the tournament lead in the third round of the $75,000 Columbia 300 Open. Macpherson finished the 18-game qualifying period with a 3,883 pin fall and holds 37-pin margin over Lisa Bishop, Bellville, Michigan who began the day as the tournament leader.

Closing out her round with a 737 series (225-243-269), Macpherson is averaging 215.72 at the Open. She has advanced to the championship round in seven tournaments in 2001, but only once as the No. 1 seed.

"Staying on top or close to the top of the leader board gives you confidence as a tournament progresses," said Macpherson. "The challenge for me is to continue to improve round by round and hopefully peak in the championships."

Attempting to advance to the TV finals for the second consecutive week, Bishop used a 1,219 pin fall in today's six game block to finish with a 3,846 total and maintain a 32-pin lead over Liz Johnson, Cheektowaga, N.Y.

In fourth place is 15-time titlest Anne Marie Duggan, Edmond, Oklahoma. Duggan has chalked up 3,782 pins thus far with a 210.11 average. Rounding out the top five is Michelle Feldman with 3,779 and 209.94.

Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richmond Hills, Texas and Macpherson rung up the high games of the day by rolling 269s respectively. Marcia Kamrowski, Boca Raton, Fla. also was one of the day's high rollers posting back-to-back scores of a 266 and 259 to help her qualify for match play starting this evening.

Ohio native Karen Bowlby (Logan) was the lone Ohioan to make the tournament's top 24. Bowlby currently sits in 21st place with 3,615 pin fall. Other area PWBA players Mandy Wilson, (Dayton) and Charlene Lockitski (North Olmsted) failed to advance.

Tournament action continues at the Tiki Lanes tonight at 6:30 p.m. for the start of match play with the top 24 competitors. Two more rounds of match play will take place on Wednesday (Oct. 10, 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.).

At the conclusion of match play, the top five finishers compete on Thursday (Oct. 11) at 7 p.m. for the championship rounds. ESPN2 will tape the championships and later broadcast them on Monday, October 15, at 8:00 p.m. (EST).
