-1999 World Cup Champ Amanda Bradley To Compete In Riga

10/02/2002 - AMF Bowling
LONDON, ENGLAND - Amanda Bradley, who won the 1999 women's AMF Bowling World Cup, will be aiming for Title No. 2 when the 38th edition of the tournament takes place October 19-26 in Riga, Latvia.

Bradley, a 27-year-old office worker from Lambton, New South Wales, Australia, won the 2002 South Pacific Classic last month in Melbourne. The South Pacific Classic is Australia's national World Cup qualifier.

"I was in third place at the end of qualifying and about 150 [pins] behind [the leader], but I finished 134 in front and averaged 238 on the final day," Bradley told the Newcastle Herald's Renee Valentine. The righthander overcame early leaders Kate Wilton and Kelly Warren and held off last year's Australian World Cup bowler, Ann Maree Putney, to earn the trip to Riga.

Bradley, who at 16 became the youngest Australian woman ever to roll a perfect game, stepped away from competitive bowling the past two years to have a baby. She resurrected her career this year by winning the Vic 150 and the Hunter Valley Margaret Cole Cup, two of Australia's most prestigious women's tournaments.

After winning the Bowling World Cup in October of 1999, Bradley captured gold medals in women's doubles (with Joy Hayman) and all-events the following month at the 1999 WTBA World Championships in Abu Dhabi, UAE. She joins three other previous World Cup champions in this year's World Cup field: Tore Torgersen of Norway (1994), Mel Isaac of Wales (2000) and Ahmed Shaheen of Qatar, the men's 1999 champion.

Accompanying Bradley will be Paul Trotter of Box Hill, Victoria, who won the men's division of the South Pacific Classic. Trotter, a 30-year-old customer service representative, is making his Bowling World Cup debut in Riga.

-Dorin-Ballard Still No. 1

10/02/2002 - PWBA
COLUMBIA, Tenn. - In a round that saw the tournament lead change hands four times in eight matches, Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas, re-emerged as the tournament leader after 34 games at the Lady Ebonite Classic at the Ebonite Galaxy Lanes. Dorin-Ballard is averaging 216.79 with an 11-5-0 match play record (Ed. note - players earn 30 bonus pins for each match won during match play rounds) and a 7,701 pinfall.

"I didn't have that good a shot today. I wanted to play out but by the second game I was already moving into the track," said Dorin-Ballard.

"Tonight I just want to hang in there and hopefully be able to play the gutter a little more. Some pairs are playing better than others, but ultimately to make the show I'm going to have to keep winning matches because the field is very tight."

Defending champion Leanne Barrette, Pleasanton, Calif. pushed her way into second place with the help of a 12-4-0 record. Entering the week Barrette had the best overall match play record of the season with a 159-101-4 mark (.602 win pct.). Her 214.35 average and 7,648 pinfall gives the five-time Women's International Bowling Congress All-American a 21-pin lead over Liz Johnson, Cheektowaga, NY.

"I don't know what it is about match play," said Barrette. "I think I just start to get into the rhythm of the tournament once it starts."

Making a move from eighth to third, Johnson went 6-2-0 in the fifth. She started the morning off with a 726 series (247-269-210). For the tournament she has totals of 215.50, 10-6-0 and 7,627.

Rallying from 12th to fourth, 22-year veteran Tish Johnson, Northridge, Calif. also got off to a hot start with a 709 series (257-218-234). Johnson's 6-2-0 session helped her to an 11-5-0 record. Her 211.91 average and 7,535 pinfall puts her 27-pins ahead of Cathy Dorin-Lizzi, Linden, NJ., who for the fifth straight round is in the top five with 10-6-0, 212 and 7,508.

With 240 bonus pins available in the final stanza, 10 players trail Dorin-Lizzi for the last championship round spot.

The sixth round starts tonight at 6:30 p.m. At its conclusion, the top five bowlers compete on Thursday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. in the championships. ESPN2 will tape the championships for an October 7 broadcast at 11 p.m. (ET). ESPN2 is scheduled to re-air the finals on October 8 at 5:00 a.m. (ET).
