-Gaines's 300 Game Expands Her Lead At $50,000 North Myrtle Beach Classic

10/02/2001 - PWBA
      N. MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - A perfect game helped Kendra Gaines, Sebring, Fla., increase her lead at the $50,000 North Myrtle Beach Classic to 187 pins following the first eight games of match play Tuesday evening at North Myrtle Beach Bowling Center.

Gaines carded a 147 game prior to rolling the 300, the first one of the tournament and the sixth of her career. The perfecto brought her actual pinfall for 26 games to 5,789 and a 222.65 average, and the five of eight matches Gaines won added 150 bonus pins for a grand total of 5,939 pins for 26 games. Her nearest rival, Cara Honeychurch of Australia, compiled a 3-5-0 match play record to push her total pinfall to 5,752; she is averaging 217.76.

"Everything that could go wrong, went wrong in that 147 game," Gaines recalled. "I had four splits and a washout, and I tried everything I could think of, but nothing would work. So I decided to go back to a ball I used earlier in the block for my last game on lanes 3 and 4, moved in deeper on the lane, and discovered I had more room to maneuver.

"I kept my mind focused after shooting 147 by telling myself that everyone was having up-and-down games, and that I was still in pretty good shape. And I didn't think that I had bowled that badly; it was just a snowball effect and I got caught up in it. Tomorrow I'll be watching the ball very closely in practice to make a good decision on where to play, because if the past two days are any indication, it's going to be a whole new game again as far as ball reaction goes."

Pulling into third place is Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas, whose 6-2-0 record brought her to a grand total of 5,735 pins and a 213.65 average. Dede Davidson, Las Vegas, moved from seventh to fourth with a 5-3-0 match play record, 5,728 pins and a 214.53 average. Belleville, Mich.'s Lisa Bishop and Shelton, Conn.'s Jennifer Swanson are tied for fifth place with 5,699 pins. Bishop fashioned a 4-4-0 record Tuesday night and is averaging 214.57 on an actual pinfall count of 5,579, while Shelton's 6-2-0 match play record enhanced her actual pinfall total of 5,519 by 180 pins. She is averaging 212.26.

Defending champion Tish Johnson, Northridge, Calif., has a 4-4-0 match play record and 5,558 total pins. She is currently in 14th place, 141 pins away from the top five.

Match play continues Wednesday at North Myrtle Beach Bowling Center, with two eight-game blocks scheduled for 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. The top five following Wednesday night's action move into the championship round Thursday, to be taped by ESPN2 for airing Monday, October 8, at 8 p.m. and Thursday, October 11, at 1 a.m. (all times are Eastern). The PWBA's web page, www.pwba.com, will carry the frame-by-frame action live on its Webscorer (click on "Live Scoring"), beginning Thursday at 7 p.m. Eastern. Travelodge Hotels will reward any bowler rolling a perfect game in the TV finals with a $50,000 bonus.

-Kendra Gaines Holds Onto Top Spot At $50,000 North Myrtle Beach Classic

10/02/2001 - PWBA
      N. MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Kendra Gaines of Sebring, Fla., continues to set the pace at the $50,000 North Myrtle Beach Classic, underway at North Myrtle Beach Bowling Center.

Gaines' closing 258 game moved her back into the lead by 66 pins ahead of Cara Honeychurch of Australia, who stumbled with a 190. Gaines is averaging 223.94 for the first 18 games with 4,031 pins, while Honeychurch, seeking her fourth Tour title this year, is averaging 220.27 with 3,965 pins.

"I got caught in the [lane pattern] transition between games four and five today, and I decided to just 'camp out' and do nothing, which wasn't a great decision," Gaines said wryly. "The look the lanes had yesterday was totally opposite what I found today. Yesterday, I started playing the lanes on the right and moved inside; today I started deeper to the left but had to move to the right.

"It just proves that you can never start with a preconceived notion of how to play a lane. You have to approach every day of a tournament as if it were the start of a new tournament, and be open to everything the lane is telling you."

Following Gaines and Honeychurch is Liz Johnson, Cheektowaga, N.Y., with 3,937 pins and a 218.72 average. Jennifer Swanson, Shelton, Conn., moved from a 13th place finish Monday evening to claim fourth spot with 3,845 pins and a 213.61 average; while Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nev., moved into the top five with 3,827 pins and a 212.61 average.

Defending champion Tish Johnson, Northridge, Calif., slipped to 11th place, with 3,798 pins and a 211.00 average, while Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas, fired the high game Tuesday morning-279-to finish five pins behind Macpherson in sixth place. Dorin-Ballard has an 18-game total of 3,822 pins and a 212.33 average.

North Myrtle Beach's Amber Strickland and Michelle McFee completed qualifying with totals of 3,086 and 3,026 pins, respectively. Rhonda Sabiston, from nearby Conway, S.C., tied for 38th place with 3,311 pins.

The top 24 scorers move into head-to-head, round-robin match play Tuesday night, in which bowlers earn 30 bonus pins for each match they win. The first eight-game block of match play begins at 6:30 p.m. at North Myrtle Beach Bowling Center, with two more scheduled for Wednesday at 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.
