-Johnson Increases Tournament Lead At Paula Carter Classic

09/10/2001 - PWBA
DAVIE, Fl. - After completing two days of qualifying at the $50,000 Paula Carter Classic, a familiar name sits on top of the leader board. Liz Johnson, Cheektowaga, New York, widened her lead over the rest of the field today at the Don Carter University Lanes by knocking down 1,924 pins in nine qualifying games. Johnson, who captured the Foundation Games title last week in Sebring, Fl., has now led all tournament qualifiers in seven of the last eight preliminary rounds in PWBA action. "When you're the tournament leader it's tough to keep your focus from game to game. Today I just tried to minimize my mistakes and make sure I didn't lose my concentration." Johnson's two-day total of 3,915 pins moved her 76 pins ahead of second place Kendra Gaines, Sebring, Fl. Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas, and Tammy Turner, Ogden, Utah, are tied for third place with 3,809 pins while Marianne DiRupo, Succasunna, New Jersey rounded of the top five with 3,801 pins. High game of the day belonged to Laura Lee Daniel, Corona, California, who bowled a 278 to start today's qualifying. In addition to Gaines, area PWBA competitors that finished today's round in the top 24 included Kim Adler (Cocoa) and Marcia Kamrowski (Boca Raton). The top 24 players begin match play competition in six-game blocks on Tuesday (Sept. 11) morning at 9:00 a.m. and in the afternoon at 2:00 p.m. The players will repeat the same schedule on Wednesday (Sept. 12). The top five following Wednesday afternoon's action advance to the championship round on Thursday (Sept. 13) beginning at 2 p.m. The Paula Carter Classic finals will be televised on ESPN2 Monday, September 17 at 8 p.m. (EST). -Laughlin, Nevada's Riverside Lanes And Resort To Host Women's U.S. Open

09/10/2001 - PWBA
ROCKFORD, Ill. - The 34-lane Riverside Lanes, housed within Don Laughlin's Riverside Resort Hotel and Casino in Laughlin, Nevada, will host the 2001 Women's U.S. Open Bowling Championship December 1-9, the Professional Women's Bowling Association announced today.

In addition, PWBA officials announced that the championship round of the Women's U.S. Open Bowling Championship will air live on ESPN from Riverside Lanes Sunday, December 9, 2001, from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern time. The women's finals will air immediately following the conclusion of the men's U.S. Open finals, also on ESPN.

"The facilities and enthusiasm of the staff at Riverside Lanes, combined with the beautiful southern Nevada locale, are going to make this a memorable U.S. Open for all participants, amateur and professional," said Jan Schmidt, PWBA director of marketing. "This will be a great place to launch a new era in women's bowling."

Riverside Resort Hotel and Casino will serve as the headquarters hotel for the tournament as well as the venue for all official U.S. Open functions, such as the Champions' Dinner to be sponsored by the Bowling Proprietors' Association of America.

"The entire staff and management of Riverside is delighted to be part of this historic athletic competition," said Richard Turner, Riverside Hotel Resort and Casino's director of marketing. "We fully support the PWBA and all of its efforts to increase the purse for the women bowlers, and we intend to make this the biggest and most successful women's bowling championship ever.

"What's equally exciting for us is that the Women's U.S. Open Bowling Championship is going to bring a lot of first-time visitors to Laughlin. We think they're going to take this city to their hearts and want to come back again and again to sample everything this area has to offer."

PWBA and Riverside officials declined to announce specific details of the agreement, but they did note that Riverside's contribution to the prize fund, coupled with a contribution promised previously by BPAA officials, will enable women U.S. Open entrants to roll for a minimum purse of $300,000. Efforts to secure additional sponsorship for the Women's U.S. Open Bowling Championship continue, and several U.S. corporations have expressed interest in sponsorship opportunities.

John Falzone, PWBA president, said that grassroots contributions designated for the Women's U.S. Open Bowling Championship Fund continue to arrive daily at PWBA headquarters and now total several thousand dollars. "When you consider that a majority of these contributions are at the $1 to $10 level, and are coming from fans and others interested in seeing women bowlers get a fair shake-well, I think that speaks volumes as to the support that is out there for this event." (NOTE: Donations of $1.00 or more via check should be made out to: PWBA Championship Fund and sent to PWBA Championship Fund, c/o PWBA, 7171 Cherryvale Boulevard, Rockford IL 61112, or via the official web site of the PWBA, www.pwba.com.)

Don Laughlin, founder of the City of Laughlin, Nevada, owns the Riverside Resort Hotel and Casino. The complex sits on the banks of the Colorado River in Laughlin, at the beginning of its gaming district on Casino Drive. Its full-service accommodations include 1,400 guest rooms, smoking and non-smoking casinos, on-site restaurants, cafes and lounges, and free auto parking. The city itself is approximately 90 miles south of Las Vegas and is easily accessible by interstate highway and charter air service. It attracts millions of visitors annually to partake in its outdoor activities, which include jet-skiing, motorboat racing, and camping, as well as its gaming opportunities.

The PWBA and BPAA reached an understanding this past August that allowed the PWBA to obtain the licensing rights to the annual Women's U.S. Open from BPAA and stage the event in a venue separate from the men's U.S. Open.

09/10/2001 - PWBA
DAVIE, Fl. - Coming off a championship victory at the Foundation Games last week in Sebring, Florida, Liz Johnson continued her hot streak by finishing the first nine qualifying games today as the tournament leader at the $50,000 Paula Carter Classic at the Don Carter University Lanes.

Johnson completed today's qualifying by rolling a 268 and a 267 in her final two games to improve her total pin-count to 1991. Johnson holds a six-pin lead over Karen Stroud (1985) and a 17-pin margin over Carolyn Dorin-Ballard as the action moves to Monday morning for the second half of the preliminaries.

"Last week's win was a real confidence boost for me," said Johnson. "I felt more relaxed coming to this tournament and right now I'm just having a lot of fun competing."

Cathy Dorin-Lizzi excited fans watching the today's event by rolling a near-perfect 299 game in her eighth game of competition. Dorin-Lizzi's score was the highest of the day. She is currently tied for ninth with PWBA "Ironwoman" Tish Johnson with 1906-pins. For Tish, the Paula Carter Classic is her 208th consecutive tournament.
