-Liz Johnson Cruises Into Lead At $50,000 Foundation Games V

09/03/2001 - PWBA
SEBRING, Fla. - Liz Johnson, Cheektowaga, N.Y., put 56 pins' worth of distance between herself and nearest competitor Anne Marie Duggan, Edmond, Okla., during Sunday night's second and concluding squad of Round 1 at the $50,000 Foundation Games V, underway at Kegel Training Center.

Johnson, who earlier this year won the $50,000 St. Clair Classic, averaged 215.11 during her first nine games of competition, downing 1,936 pins compared to Duggan's 1,880 pins. Kim Terrell, Daly City, Calif., stands just two pins behind Duggan with pinfall of 1,878. The Squad B threesome surpassed the earlier efforts of dual leaders Marianne DiRupo, Succasunna, N.J., and amateur Lucy Sandelin of Tampa, Fla., who are co-holders of fourth place with 1,863 pins.

Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas, who has already won five pro titles in 2001, stands in sixth at the completion of Round 1, with 1,852 pins.

Defending champion Lisa Bishop, Belleville, Mich., struggled in her first nine games and averaged only 171.00. She sits in 37th place with 1,539 pins.

Squad B, which includes Johnson, Duggan, Terrell, Dorin-Ballard and Duggan, resumes competition first on Monday with a nine-game block, beginning at 10 a.m. Squad A, which includes DiRupo and Sandelin, completes its second nine-game block Monday afternoon. Following Monday's Round 2 action, the field will be narrowed to the top 24 scorers, who continue qualifying Tuesday with Rounds 3 and 4. The lane dressing pattern for Monday shifts from the 32-foot pattern laid down for Sunday's Round 1 competition to a "long" pattern that runs 41 feet from the foul line. The use of different lane dressing patterns within one tournament is designed to test the athletes' versatility and skill at making adjustments on various "playing fields."

-DiRupo, Sandelin Share Lead At Foundation Games V

09/03/2001 - PWBA
SEBRING, Fla. - Marianne DiRupo, Succasunna, N.J., is tied with amateur Lucy Sandelin of nearby Tampa, Fla., after the first squad of competition at the $50,000 Foundation Games V, underway at Kegel Training Center in Sebring.

DiRupo, seeking her first pro title since 1998, and Sandelin, a multi-time Team USA member who won the 1976 AMF Bowling World Cup in Iran, each carded a score of 1,863 pins for the first nine games to average 207.00 and top the 21 players on Squad A.

Thirty-three pins behind the leaders is Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nev., the reigning PWBA Player of the Year. Macpherson averaged 203.33 for her first nine games with 1,830 pins. Rounding out the top four is Cara Honeychurch of Australia, a three-time winner thus far in 2001. Honeychurch is averaging 201.88 with 1,817 pins, three pins ahead of Tish Johnson of Northridge, Calif., who is competing in her 207th consecutive pro tournament.

The remaining 21 players in the field who compose Squad B take to the lanes at 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon for their first nine games. The Foundation Games V utilizes two distinct lane dressing patterns over the course of the competition. Sunday's competition is taking place on lanes that are dressed with 23.36 mls. of conditioner laid down to 32 feet from the foul line. The second pattern--the one they will compete on Monday in Round 2--will apply 23.44 mls. of conditioner down the lane to a distance of 41 feet from the foul line.
