-Barrette Takes Aim At Miller High Life Players Championship

07/22/2002 - PWBA
COLLIERVILLE, Tenn. - With two championships to her credit in the last three tournaments it should come as no surprise that Leanne Barrette, Pleasanton, Calif. sits on top of the leaderboard after one round at the Miller High Life National Players Championship. Barrette's average 229.25 (1,834 pinfall) was almost 14-pins higher than second place Rachel Perez, San Marcos, Texas.

"It's always good to get off to a good start at a major," said Barrette. "My shoulder has been bothering me the last four days so I had to get the ball off softer than usual. I think that helped me play the lanes correctly today. The carry was very tough."

A winner of consecutive titles at the Empire State PWBA Classic and the Greater Syracuse Classic, Barrette completed the morning with the round's top individual score of 288 and the top series of 720 (236-196-288). She led the field in games above 200 notching seven of eight.

Trailing the five-time Women's International Bowling Congress All-American with totals of 215.87 and 1,727, Perez is seeking her first career title. The eighth-year pro is competing in just her third tournament this season. In 2001 campaign she ranked 29th in competition points while cashing in 14 of 16 tournaments.

Australian Maxine Nable is just 10-pins behind Perez with 214.62 and 1,717. Nable posted the second highest series of the round starting the session with a 719 (248-247-224).

Jennifer Swanson, Shelton, Conn., who returned to the tour after a week layoff, is in fourth with 211.87 and 1,695 while Cara Honeychurch, Australia, is in fifth with 210.62 and 1,685. One of the tour's most consistent players, Honeychurch has seven top ten finishes in the last nine events and co-leads the PWBA in championship round appearances with five.

Defending National Players champion Liz Johnson, Cheektowaga, NY is in seventh with 209.37 and 1,675.

Qualifying for the 37-woman field resumes tonight at 5:30 p.m. with another eight-game qualifying block. Tuesday, July 23 tournament action continues with the final qualifying round at 10 a.m. Following Tuesday morning's action the field will be cut to the top 24. The top 24 will begin the first of three eight-game match play rounds Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 24 two more match play rounds will take place at 10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. At the conclusion of match play, the top five bowlers compete in the ESPN2 stepladder finals on Thursday, July 24 at 7 p.m.
