-Johnson Grabs Top Spot At Dallas Open

07/15/2002 - PWBA
DALLAS, Texas. - Liz Johnson, Cheektowaga, N.Y. took hold of the tournament lead after nine games at the Dallas Open at Don Carter West. The seventh year pro cranked out a 221.44 average and a 1,993 pinfall to lead Australian Cara Honeychurch by 20 pins (219.22 and 1,973).

"It's always a nice confidence booster to start a tournament as the leader after the first round," said Johnson. "Today I really didn't move from pair to pair. I played the same spot most of the round and made the right ball changes when I had to."

The 2001 Robby Award recipient, given to the Professional Women's Bowling Association member that best exemplifies the most positive image on and off the lanes, Johnson opened up her session with a 683 series (235-205-243) and managed eight of nine games with a score of 205 or better.

Honeychurch, who this season has one title to her credit and co-leads the tour in championship round appearances with five, was less consistent in her first five games with scores of 183-244-226-179-190. However, the Aussie turned her game up a notch in the final three games closing with a 728 series (236-204-288) including the highest individual score of the first round.

Kim Adler, Cocoa, Fla. and Marianne DiRupo, Succasunna, N.J. tied for the third slot with totals of 218.22 and 1,967. University of Nebraska bowler Diandra Hyman, Dyer, Ind. closed out the top five with 214 and 1,926 respectively.

Defending champion and N. Richland Hills, Texas resident Carolyn Dorin-Ballard finished the morning in ninth place with 211.33 and 1,902. Other area bowlers that were among the top 25 included Karen Stroud, Victoria (17th - 201.77, 1,816), Mary Betke, Waco (23rd - 197.66, 1,779) and Shana Ray, Corpus Christi (25th - 196.66, 1,770).

Qualifying for the 48-woman field resumes on Tuesday, July 16, at 11 a.m. with another nine-game qualifying block. Following Tuesday's action the field will be cut to the top 24. The tournament continues on Wednesday, July 17 and Thursday, July 18 at 11 a.m. each day with 12-game match play rounds. At the conclusion of match play, the top five bowlers compete in the ESPN2 stepladder finals on Friday, July 19 at 7 p.m.
