-Mersch And Pluhowsky Lead Competition Into Junior Gold Match Play

      RENO, Nev. -- After the semifinal rounds, Jeffery Mersch, of Tampa, Fla., and Shannon Pluhowsky, of Phoenix, Ariz., lead the competition at the fourth annual USA Junior Gold National Bowling Championships in Reno, Nev. Mersch moved up in the standings from 63rd place and Pluhowsky regained the lead from third place.

      Mersch shot 2,588 for 12 games, averaging 215 during the two semifinal rounds. He is averaging 202 for the tournament. Only five pins out of first place is Chris Klerk, of Henderson, Nev., with 2,315 total pinfall for the day. Defending champion Nathan Bohr sits in fifth place, only 25 pins behind Mersch.

      "I never thought I'd be in first place," said Mersch, first-time competitor at the National Championships. "I was just doing everything right today. It's my dream to make Junior TEAM USA."

      Defending champion Pluhowsky averaged 206 over 12 games, for a total pinfall of 2,476. Pluhowsky has taken an enormous lead in the girls' division and leads by 239 pins over Amanda Burgoyne, of NewPort, Minn.

      "I'm happy that I bowled so well today," said Pluhowsky. "I'll be more relaxed in match play tomorrow and have more fun while I'm bowling."

      On Saturday, the top 17 boys and the top 16 girls will play two rounds of eight-game match play. The leaders in the boys' and girls' divisions following match play are crowned 2002 Junior Gold National Champions and the top six athletes in each division earn berths on 2002 Junior TEAM USA. Junior TEAM USA will represent the United States in international competition in 2002. This team is designed to be part of a feeder system for the U.S. national amateur team, TEAM USA.

      The event features nearly 900 of North America's best youth bowlers competing for $50,000 in scholarships, individual titles and berths on 2002 Junior TEAM USA. This tournament is the highest level of competition for members of the Young American Bowling Alliance's Junior Gold Program and is conducted on behalf of USA Bowling.

-Vermilyea And Mcpherson Lead Competition Into Junior Gold Semifinals

      RENO, Nev. -- After the third day of qualifying, Erik Vermilyea, of Maplewood, Minn., and Leigh McPherson of Tempe, Ariz., lead the competition at the fourth annual USA Junior Gold National Bowling Championships in Reno, Nev. Vermilyea moved up in the standings from 21st place and McPherson moved up from fourth.

      Vermilyea shot 3,806 for 18 games, averaging 211 during the three qualifying rounds. He averaged 229 during today's qualifying round. In second place is Chris Klerk, of Henderson, Nev., with 3,766. Defending champion Nathan Bohr sits in third place with 3,763.

      Girls' division leader McPherson averaged 210 over 18 games, for a total pinfall of 3,628. She is competing in her fourth Junior Gold National Bowling Championships. Only eight pins behind McPherson is Heather Hoffman, of West Lawn, Pa. Defending champion Shannon Pluhowsky is currently in third with 3,601.

      "My ultimate goal for this year is to make Junior TEAM USA," said McPherson, a sophomore at Arizona State University. "I keep telling myself to concentrate, stay focused and to make good shots."

      On Friday, 34 girls and 92 boys will bowl two six-game semifinal rounds to determine the top 16 boys and the top 16 girls. The top 32 finalists will play two rounds of eight-game match play on Saturday. The leaders in the boys' and girls' divisions following match play are crowned 2002 Junior Gold National Champions and the top six athletes in each division earn berths on 2002 Junior TEAM USA.
